Posted June 11, 200718 yr When I got Gonzo and Junior, they both had been pre-clipped, either by the petstore or the breeder they came from. Anyway, I have had the pair about a month or so now and both are happy lil guys. However, yesterday, when I let the kids out for their playtime, I noticed some blood on Gonzo's wing tips. Upon heavier enspection, I believe what he has are very very short bloodfeathers that are finally starting to regrow, and are now getting blood in them, but since they are so short, they ends arent closed and so he has some blood on the tips. The right side is worse then the left, but both show small "stains of rust color like dried blood. The kids havent been fighting, so Im sure its not the others picking on him. I did treat the left (worse) side with a bit of flour paste just in case, but the bleeding seems to have stopped rahter quickly and I put him in a separate cage so I can watch and make sure no blood is cooming out, dripping on the cage paper, etc. and all seems fine except the stain still left on the end of his short feathers. I have never seen a bird clipped so short, and when I checked the other, his are also super short flight feathers as well. Is this a common occurance when you get a bird that has been over clipped or is this something I should be much more concerned about? Just looking for some similiar experiences. I would just pull the blood feather, but to be honest, they are all so short, that I fear that I would just have to continue to pull them all as they grow back in. (I may be able to get a picture at some point today if it will help, but Im trying hard not to stress him at all and I think spreading the wing for a picture might cause him some discomfort.) Anyway, that is what I was looking for advise or thoughts on. Thanks, Snip
June 11, 200718 yr Since the birds were clipped when you got them and now you seem to be having this problem.... it is a strong possibility of a french moult budgie. The clipping could have been done to disguise the problem as a youngster. The bleeding feathers growing in can be a sign of french moult. Examine the feathers really well for signs of health. Examine where the feather grows from for signs of cysts in the base from where the feather grows. http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/diseases/feather.html
