Posted June 11, 200717 yr Hello. I was wondering if anyone could give me some clues as to what mutation Smoke is. The markings on his head/neck are not black, they are a mix of blues. The markings on his wings are a grey/bluish color. His body color is white with blue on his back and a small amount of blue on his belly (near the legs). Crossed with a recessive pied female (Cloud), the babies have a variety of markings. Pictures of them can be seen at: Smoke cloud babies I had thought he was a recessive pied, but looking at the babies markings, I have been questioning that. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you. Edited June 11, 200717 yr by Nerwen
June 11, 200717 yr Hi Sandee. I changed your link to pictures of them all becuase they are in the size limits of the boards and it's easier to see them in the same window. I believe you have a Double Factor Dominant pied. They can sometimes like like a recessive. However with dominant pied they get the white iris ring in their eyes unlike recessive pied. Plus a male recessive pied keeps the baby pink cere while dominant pied get the grown up blue cere. The fact that every baby looks to be dominant pied as well leads to the fact that your male is carrying two dominant pied genes. Normally there is only a 50% chance of pied to normals. I might have guess opaline as well just looking at the picture of Smoke, but the oldest chick looks female to me and she isn't opaline. This is a sex linked gene so if your male was opaline all his daughters would be opaline as well. Are you confused? (Laughing out loud) What is Smoke? Double factor dominant pied sky blue possible greywing as well. Edited June 11, 200717 yr by Nerwen
June 11, 200717 yr Author Hi Nerwin. Thank you for your reply. Confused....yes....but totally lost....not quite yet....(Laughing out loud). So I'll ask another question to see if I can reach the totally lost stage. The babies seem to have such a mix of wing and belly markings, from fairly prominent to hardly anything. Are they all still considered dominant pied? For example, the oldest baby has a lot of marking: But the others have nowhere near the same amount of marking: Any thoughts would be appreciated. Sandee
June 12, 200717 yr I agree with Nerwen about Smoky being a double factor dominant pied. The babies are dom pieds as you can see by the large spot or patch on the back of their heads. and YES their colouring and patches can vary. You have a lovely nest of babies
June 13, 200717 yr Great shots with the bubs. As the other said they are all dominant pieds (single factors) the coloured marks around the neck/shoulders area and the patches of wing markings high on the wings are signs of dominant pied (as well as the big head spot as Kaz said) The wide range of pattens you get is one of the joys of breeding pieds.
