Eucalyptus For Budgies

I was scanning the net and found this quote...

"Eucalypts have a special place in the life of the budgerigar

The wild budgerigar has evolved alongside the Eucalypt tree and over a million years has developed an intimate bond with the tree and its leaves. Wet eucalypt leaves excite and invigorate both the wild and aviary budgerigar into a frenzy of joy. They love to bath in the wet leaves and breeding hens destructively chew the bark searching for trace elements and lysine, the breeding protein. The eucalyptus oil from the leaves has medicinal properties that stimulate the immune system and promote a strong natural resistance to disease"

I put a small branch in the flights each week. They chew at the leaves & strip the bark off over the week.I have a good supply of trees to trim, small branchs from.PPL in town might struggle to find a supply of branches.

I have people looking at me strange each week when I drag a branch home. :)

Make sure when you copy and paste a quote you add the website it came from :), then you (we) can't be accused of plagerism :)

Every week i go for a walk around my area looking for fresh gum tress branches. Today I actually cleaned out my aviary of all older branches and put in new branches. The birds love it. They love to chew the leaves, they love to chew the branches, and they love to hide in amongst the branches and leaves. I would add fresh branches every chance I get if I could

Eucalyptus is great but mine also go bananas over peppermint. The birds in the breeder cages jump onto the front of thier cages frantically waiting for theirs to come when they smell it going into the aviaries. :)

Mine especially seem to like the bark & like others have said, it really gives them some extra interests, as Budgie love to be doing something almost all the time.

It is also a go way to bring the hens into breeding condition. In 10 days time we have the Winter Solstis [sp?] and then the hens will start to get in to condition.

Having said that, I have one pair courting through the wire of the aviary after the rain we received. So that have been paired up.
