Drought & The Cost Of Seed:

Featured Replies

Something I have meant to ask on this forum for some time. It isn’t only the petrol companies that rip us off. What prices are you guys paying for your seed at this time?

I had been buying my seed from one produce merchant, I keep checking at various places over time, as the price slowly increased “because of the Drought”…I had, still stuck with this one place, as I couldn’t find anyone cheaper or getting the same brand as I was. Then a few months ago, the seed company changed the bag size from 40 kilos to 20, as is the new law. When this happened I noticed that everything had a large change in price upward, not only bird seed. Each time I went to buy this seed I was buying, after the bag size changed, it went up something like $5 a week, so I bought as much as I could store & afford before it went up even more. Soon I was paying the same price for 20 kilos that I was paying for 40…it kept rising until the last time I bought it cost me over $49 for a bag. Then lucky for me I asked at a shop that was selling small amounts of seed, I didn’t even think they were buying in larger amounts. I found out they were getting in the same brand seed as the other place & were still selling it for $25, needless to say I wont be going back to the other place.

My birds go through a lot of seed, Norm. It seems to be about 40 kilos every 3 weeks or so. The cost of budgie breeder mix is expensive. My birds get a mix...where I mix budgie breeder, finch mix and avairy mix together ina large drum and that is their seed blend.

Yes Norm has got very expensive, but lest hope with this rain that it might come down after the next crop.

I buy the 25kg bag Of Golden Cob Budgie breeders mix, before the drought I was paying 32.00 a bag. The last time I bought it it $56.00 for the same thing and that was 3 months ago, so it could be any price now. I will need to buy some more soon. I bought 3 bags then plus a bag of canary seed which was a really good price. But the canary seed came from a different place I bought a 20kg bag at a $1.80 kg which is the price before the drought and he had to order it for me so it was good stuff.

I always add a bit more canary seed for my breeding birds.

Anyway lets hope the drought will break soon. Cheers Julie :)

Yes seed has gone up for me too. One week I went in to get seed and there was only three 1kg bags on the shelf (plus the big 20 bags) as of yet I've only been getting 6 kg each time which lasts about 2 weeks. I was told there was trouble with the shipment that week. The price then was $2.10 for 2 kg bags. Returned the next time I needed it and it was now $7.40 for 2 kg!!!!!!!

The tag on the shelf was still saying $40 for 20 kgs so when I go back for more i might see how that much goes. (Unless it's a different price now) I'm also looking around again to see what others are selling seed for.

I buy my seed by the pallet, 28 bags. A mix of 50% canary.5% oats,20% of jap millet. 10% panican red &the same of yellow & 5% of nigra. It worked out at $48.oo a bag at my door. The bags are 40kgs.The local feed stores are $70.oo a 40kgs bag & its only about 35% canary.

I buy budgie seed mix from the pet shop for my aviary budgies and the price hasn't gone up that i've noticed. It's about $16 for a 10kg bag.

You need to watch that they are still useing quality seed & not useing a cheap filler.

How would i know? I've successfully sprouted the seed mix before, so i'm pretty sure it's reasonably fresh.

Well macka.....I buy budgie breeder mix in 5kg bags....at $12.65 a bag.... this has not changed

for 2 years...having said that..they will probably put the price up:(

Paul, Just as well, they havent put the price up.You are paying enough for it now.

40kgs=$101.20 :(

Hi all, firstly, Paul, check the price of the 10kg where you get the seed. A couple of local stores here charge $11 or $12 for 5kg, but only $17 or $19 for 10kg.

WA seed has always been more expensive than the seed available elsewhere, so the way I see it, you guys are finally catching up to us ;)

That is because all seed that comes into WA has to be irradiated so that it can't sprout, so obviously no one wants a dead seed so WA has to grow their own. We have such stringent import laws for anything organic even from within our own country that we really are more like our own nation.

Secession movements have surfaced several times in Western Australia. A 1933 referendum for secession from the Federation of Australia passed with a two-thirds majority. The referendum had to be ratified by the British Parliament, which declined to act, on the grounds that it would contravene the Australian Constitution.

The more I think about secession, the more I agree that it would be the best thing for WA. It would lead to massive growth as we are a major contributor to Federal wealth and over 50% of export dollars are a result of our oil, mineral and diamond rich regions in the top half of our state. Yet despite this contribution to our Federal wealth we get very little in budget returns due to our lower population.

So, back on the subject, our seed prices have not changed as we are not at all affected by the eastern states drought and most of our seed stock is grown in the lower 1/3 of the state which has been operating with the same water conditions for years.

Maybe I should go into politics one day :D

Feathers,If what you are saying, most of the seed is grown in the state.

You could orginise a few breeders & buy direct from the grower. That what I do.I have 2or 3 breeders buy from me,at what it costs me& now it gone to $70.00 there will be more of them asking, if I have any to sell.

There are breeder who have organised themselves this way. A couple of them are getting together to start growing white millet as well.

Thanks for your input guys, looks like we are all paying high prices. As someone said, since the drought the price has been going up & the quality going down. I have noticed, as things got worse; that the amount of canary seed has gone down, as it’s the most expensive. In the eastern states, I think Golden Cob is the most expensive, I think the quality is high & they also have additives, which the seed I buy doesn’t.

At our bird sale last weekend, we had a grower selling seed & it was the same price, I was buying locally at, but it had a lot more canary seed in the mix, I’m thinking of getting in touch with him & talking to other guys in the bird club, to see how much we would have to buy to get him to deliver to our area. It would be good to help the grower & cut out the middleman, who usually is the one that makes the most profit. At least you guys are lucky in the west, as because of the Nullarbor, you’re in a position where you can quarantine & save yourself from getting some of the bugs & pests we have in the east. I know it can make things difficult in one way, but at least in another way, you can be free of some of the problems we have.

This is very true and why we have such stringent import laws and quarantine in the state. We are currently battling cane toads that are heading to the border via the N.T. So far, none have made it, but it is becoming an expensive fight that we hope to win.

Perth is the most isolated capital City in the world, and that suits us just fine

I buy my seed and mix it. 12.5 kg Canary, 5 kg Jap, 5kg White french, 2 kg Redc Panican and 0.5 kg Nigar. I also buy 5 kg Hulled oats. and an additional 2.5 kg Canary.

Thanks Feathers for all that info......I'll ask where I get my seed for a 10kg price....

  • 2 weeks later...

We buy avigrain Budgie blue which is 50% canary for $32 per 20kg bag, which we don't mind paying at all... They are also supplemented by eucalyptus leaves and branches, carrots, spinach, endives, oranges, grasses and our lovely mix of eggs and stuff :)

A mate had 10 bags of seed droped off today,$68.00 40kg, the bloke told him,all the seed was being imported,& white millet is now as dear as canery.& said it could go up a bit more before Xmas.

be careful if you are going to change brands or find a cheaper mix then make sure you slowly change the mixs buy blending them together so your birds get use to the new mix, they can go backwards if you suddenly change the mix and even worse if they have chicks..

The budgie breeder mix I bought last week was $39 for 20 kilos.
