Awesome Soft Food Recipe

We have a recipe for soft food that we could now no longer live without... The budgies love it, and the chicks are thriving on it. So we thought we'd share :) We buy most of our ingredients from Woolworths, home brand :hap:

Ingredients:

3 cups of Oats

1/2 cup of Processed Bran

1/2 cup of Wheat Germ

1/2 cup of Egg and Biscuit

4 Carrots

6 hard boiled Eggs

6 Endive leaves OR

Bunch of Parsley

Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl.

Put hard boiled eggs including the shell in food processor then add processed egg to dry mixture

Finely cut carrots then blend in the food processor.

Add carrots to dry mix.

Finely chop endives and/or parsley (we usually alternate between the endives and parsley every few days)

Add chopped endives/ parsley to mix.

Mix well.

The mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days. We lessen the recipe as needed, but we feed morning and night with the soft food, so we do tend to go through a lot.

We also supply our birds with eucalyptus branches and leaves twice a week, fed in the morning after their first big morning feed and the leaves are taken out a few hours before lights out to ensure chicks are fed seed and soft feed for the night.

Hope this helps. It sure has inproved the crops on our little ones.

Sorry Kaz... I didn't realise there was a section for recipes *blushes* And here I was thinking how smart I was for putting it here (Laughing out loud) :)

Not a problem...you need a roadmap to find your way around here sometimes :hap:

PS your recipe is very similar to what I make also. My birds love it too

Yeah.. A few members at our club use it, and they cannot believe the difference in their chicks! Really puts the meat on em :hap:

Very similar to my recipe, but I also have polenta in there and burghal ( cracked wheat ). Fine sliced bokchoy as well.

Great recipe there, is the oats rolled oats like we make porridge :excl:

I made this recipe for my birds today and am going to give it to them tonight for their night feed, I made up half of the volume with a couple of changes, I used 1 egg instead of 3 but next time I will do 2 because they had egg in their breakfast this morning plus my partner won't let me give them too much egg as he reckons it's is not good for their liver or what ever ( I wish I new the truth as most people give them egg).

and I used marie biscuit made fine in the food processor mainly because I do not have any egg & biscuit and I live in a small town and I can't buy any till I go to Shepparton.

That's the problem about living in a small town I am using Daz's soft food recipe which is great but I have to keep my supplies up and I was giving my birds what Daz gives his at night which was mung bean & snow bean sprouts and the birds loved them but I can not buy here or Kyabram it has to be a big supermarket for them to stock it. I drove to Kyabram on Monday which is 38 km from here and they have a big Safeway supermarket and they do not stock them because they reckon the store is not big enough.

Anyway my point is that your recipe you can by the ingredients almost any where and really quite cheap so thanks very much for posting it.

I will let you know if they like it but I am very sure they will. :)

I made a variation of this for my birds today. I used bokchoy and i added some rice crumbs because I didn't have any carrot. It turned out great!

I'm glad you guys liked it... We usually add whatever fresh vegetables we have lying around too... How did your budgies like it Splat?

Great recipe there, is the oats rolled oats like we make porridge :excl:

Yes.. I forgot to mention that we usually give the oats a quick blitz in the blender to make them a little smaller

Yep theyr'e are starting to eat it, I put the process bran and oats in the blender too, to make it a bit smaller, I add silverbeet leaves etc also. Thanks for posting I think it is a great easy cheap recipe. :D

Endive is the best you can give you birds. It might take a while for them to like it but it's the best.

A couple of questions on the ingredients:

Ingredients:

3 cups of Oats

Is that rolled oats? All the supermarkets here had were either rolled oats or "quick oats".

1/2 cup of Processed Bran

All I could find that said "Processed Bran" was "Processed Wheat Bran" - bags of small hard pellets. Is that the right stuff?

1/2 cup of Wheat Germ

1/2 cup of Egg and Biscuit

4 Carrots

6 hard boiled Eggs

6 Endive leaves OR

Bunch of Parsley

Couldn't find endive at my favorite green grocer. Will have to grow my own when the ground thaws out ... Parsley will do till then :D

Now to see how long it takes the birds to like it ... they can be slow on the uptake with new foods some times.

Cheers,

KathyW.

What's your recipe for soft food Norm? :P

I already put it on one post some time ago, but would take too long to find it.

I make a big amount but you can break it down to whatever size you want.

I hard boil 6 eggs [10 minutes] & crumb them.

Crush 6 Arrowroot Biscuits.

Crush 6 Shredded whole-wheat biscuits.

A small amount of chick [poultry] starter crumbles.

And a small amount of Bread crumbs. Mix it all well & add a small amount of water to just hold it together, but not too much they don’t like it if it gets too sticky.

Then a few days a week I add a small amount of Cod Liver oil & corn niblets. I give my Greens separate, but some put grated carrot & some green in it as well.
