Posted June 5, 200718 yr how can i differentiate between a baby american budgie and a baby english budgie? do english budgies look poofy even when they're very young? i'm asking this because english budgies' appearances don't particularly appeal to me, and so i'd like to avoid choosing one not knowing that it's an english budgie. thanks in advance!
June 5, 200718 yr BBC FAQ English vs American (show vs pet) Pet Budgie this is my late Pretty Show aka Exhibition budgie this is feathers (Aly's new bird) Merlin in my siggy is part show budgie As for english not appealing to you that is okay but I have to say once I got my Merlin who is part I fell in love with this variety there is a difference in personality from what I see and even in health . Here is Merlin as a baby this is more what baby englishes look like plus you can check out Kaz, Norms, and other show breeders picture in the picture section. We say they look grumpy Edited June 5, 200718 yr by Elly
June 5, 200718 yr Author thanks! were merlin's "throat" feathers always naturally like that? he never looked like a non-english budgie? and could you describe how they're different personality/health wise?
June 6, 200718 yr His throat spots have changed to big round spots on 3 on each side evenly if he has them all. I will find a pics. Personality wise they are not as flighty. Calmer, gentlier bird for sure. Healthywise I believe in theory only that show birds (not all) are breed more for quality, health vs your pet store where you find them everywhere and they are more milled. This could cause a debate this is only my opinion. Pretty sadly passed away before the age of 2y (just 3 months ago), Merlin was healthy throughout the whole ordeal (fingers crossed he continues to be healthy). There are many such as my grandma who had a pet budgie for 18 yrs and then there are also show budgies that live that long too. So many factors to review. This is Merlin now he is considered aka english (show or exhibition) but he is not of quality as Daz's birds above that are show birds. There are show birds that are not cut out for shows that are pet birds (many are)
June 6, 200718 yr Author ooh, so show budgies really are a lot bigger! and sorry elly, i didn't mean the throat spots, but the fluffiness of the throat feathers. haha. but what you say makes sense... and i'm sorry about pretty!
June 6, 200718 yr Like Daz's picture here its about size AND feather. If you cannot compare a pet type right next to a show type, look at the feather growth. Show types have heaps fluffier feathers around their face and on top of their heads You will find that show types are a more laid back and casual and calmer bird. Edited June 6, 200718 yr by **KAZ**
