Hope We Have It Right This Time?

Several months ago we purchased two baby budgies from a market. The seller said she was sure they were boys but a pet shop owner confirmed that they were girls so she took them to sell as breeders.

Yesterday we answered an ad in the paper and this seller had a few just out of the nest (I had spent quite some time on the phone the day before ringing around trying to find someone with young ones but with no luck).

Several of the young ones that she had were real little nippers but the one we chose didn't nip at all. We are hoping that we have got it right this time.

We have called him "Bart" because he came from Simpson Street.

Can anyone tell from the photos if he is definitely a boy? We are hoping so.

i would actually think girl. Ill say about 80 percent girl.

Not 100 percent though because he is still very young so the cere colour can still change, but right now Im thinking girl for sure.

she looks very cute!! She might be a female but she can still be an awesome pet!!

I am thinking girl too very cute though

(remember to quarantine - just putting that out their incase :P)

if i were you i wouldnt worry about it. Just because some people say females are harder to tame and mostly dont talk, that doesnt mean that it would be the case for you. She is still very young so if you do everything right she will be more tame than you can imagine.

We are a bit disappointed that Bart may be girl as we had our hearts set on a boy. I have a friend in town who owns a pet shop so I might take her into her to have a look at and see what she thinks.

How long before the true colours will show on the cere and we will know for sure?

:)

Those who know what to look for and have seen a lot of ceres usually around 3-4 wks, for those more inexperienced but can tell before the cere changes around 8-10 wks. The cere will start to change around the 3-4 month mark boy going to blue on regular mutations and a more tan in a female.

Males babies will sport a very pink cere and a female will sport a more white pink cere which your baby seems to have. Also females are known to have thicker white nasal rings and boys if they have them are very thin.

Let me look for some babies here and show you a female vs male.

Here is Steel do you see how pink his cere is vs his sister's cere who is Sapphire in the next picture

Here is Sapphire see how her cere is not as pink and her white nasal rings

At this time these 2 were just around the 5 week mark and your baby is older and show even more signs of a female though ceres have been known to trick people on the net and even in person.

Here is the full post if you want to see more pics of them Kaa'z Babies

These 2 are Kaz's babies (hope you didn't mind I used them as examples Kaz)

shazzabess, i dont even think there is a need to go there because in my opinion and probably many others its definately a girl. When you took the pictures was the flash on or off??

I will post two more pics that were just taken (8.45 am). They were taken without a flash. The colouring in the pics is a bit brighter than the actual bird. It is quite pale.

There is a breeder in the next town who has young ones still in the nest and she said if we wanted to wait for them she would get a couple out and start handling them for us to choose one. This probably the way that we should have gone but I was in a hurry to get one now.

The person that we got her from said that we could return her if she was a girl so I have spoken to her and will be taking her back this afternoon.

She willingly got on the back of my hand but then proceded to try and draw blood. Nibbling is okay but not full on deep biting.

Looks like we will now have to wait for awhile until someone has some boys as we really wanted a "son".

Thanks to everyone for your input and comments.

 She is gorgeous, who cares she's female, I LOVE her, she's very pretty! :P And I am female too! Budgies don't always adhere to their stereotypes.

Just remember that males bite too. Not all males talk and not all males make great pets. My very first budgie was a female and she was an amazing pet, extraodinarily friendly and fun! What if you get a male and it doesn't meet your standards? It's very stressful to keep swapping and changing their living environment around.

If you are buying from a experinced breeder at that age they should no the difference.

Bea you said it best and macka you are right on there

I don't think I could give her up (Laughing out loud), I get attached in a heartbeat.

and if I am right Karen she has had 2 clutches and is still sweet Boris  So cute.

She is and she is due to come back inside this week!

I am so excited as her reintergration into the household is progressing alot smoother this time round.
