Here is a pair that have babies. I was wondering if you genetics buffs could tell me what we would get from these two ? Any ideas ?

all the babies will be bue

the males will be split to opaline

50% normals, 50% spangles

all will yellow faces and be type 2

Of course you have your surprises in the nest from the dad if he has any sex-linked genes he is hiding and any recessive genes that both parents may have.

That is my prediction :D

Mum: Violet Spangle Opaline Skyblue?

Dad: YF2/GF2 Skyblue

If that is the colour of the parents, you can expect:

Used the Genetic Calculator, http://www.gencalc.com/gen/eng_genc.php?sp=1Budg

% from all 1.0

12.5% 1.0 bl.goldenfaceBlue /opaline

12.5% 1.0 bl.goldenfaceBlue spangle(sf) /opaline

12.5% 1.0 bl.goldenfaceBlue violet(sf) /opaline

12.5% 1.0 blue /opaline

12.5% 1.0 blue spangle(sf) /opaline

12.5% 1.0 blue violet(sf) /opaline

12.5% 1.0 blue violet(sf) spangle(sf) /opaline

% from all 0.1

12.5% 0.1 bl.goldenfaceBlue

12.5% 0.1 bl.goldenfaceBlue spangle(sf)

12.5% 0.1 bl.goldenfaceBlue violet(sf)

12.5% 0.1 bl.goldenfaceBlue violet(sf) spangle(sf)

12.5% 0.1 blue

12.5% 0.1 blue spangle(sf)

12.5% 0.1 blue violet(sf)

12.5% 0.1 blue violet(sf) spangle(sf)

Mum is a dominant pied greywing spangle sky violet ?

50% normals, 50% spangles

Why would all be yellowfaces ?

I couldn't see any opaline in the hen..

Half will be normal half will be Spangle, half will be yellowface, half will be dominant Pied.

All these traits are dominant so half the chciks will have a chance to get the dominant gene.

As you can have more than one dominant gene on a bird you can get a yellowface dominant pied spangle.

So I would ecpect the same in single dominant genes. ie Yellow faces, Dominant Pieds, Spangles, and Normal blues.

Add to this the possible splits and anything could come up.

Sorry for lack of photos. My father in law is in hospital and our day went to pot. I will do photos tomorrow. BUT we have pieds, 4 I think so far, and we have a definite greywing.

Kaz, Greywing is a recessive gene. That would mean both birds are split to greywing.

Hope your Father inlaw is going good.

I forgot the dominant pied it was late last night sorry about that

50% dominant pied 50% norma

I thought her marking where light because of the spangle gene

if she is a greywing she would be a fullbody because her body coloring looks bright.

Hope Ken's dad is okay today and look forward to pics when you have a chance.

Interesting :D she had a greywing once before with a totally different cockbird.

Fatherinlaw spent the night on a trolley in emergency and wasnt admitted to a room till 2pm this afternoon.......not impressed :P: thats 16 hours of discomfort for the old boy. He awaits tests and cardiology results. :(

The greywing chick is appearing to be a possible cobalt or skyblue greywing. Others yet to feather, but we have some nice pieds in there and two youngest chicks have no feathers as yet.

Wow. I got the hen wrong didn't i! :D I always forget spangles can get colour over the backs of their necks, it looks so much like Opaline to me!

I'm sure the chicks will be gorgeous! :(

don't worry ellulah I thought the same thing

I can't wait for pics Kaz

ill try.

males (all blues)

12.5 percent yf spangles split opaline

12.5 percent df yf (whiteface) spangles split opaline

12.5 percent yf split opaline

12.5 percent df yf split opaline

females (all blues)

12.5 percent yf spangles

12.5 percent df yf (whiteface) spangles

12.5 percent yf

12.5 percent df yf

and then half of all should be violet and other half dominant (this MUST be wrong, I just tried. )

Dont worry Ellulah...this hen was controversial when I first got her, as we were all trying to figure her out :D A few people said she was opaline too. :P

Don't worry, a lot of people thing opaline when it's just a poorly marked spangle.

Greywing Pairings

Well, it looks like I was wrong about the greywing....markings seems to be spangle but NOT quite ?? What was confusing is the markings started out grey and there is also pale blue with the grey on the top of wings.

New photos. Two are often out of the nest...the two dom pied blues series ones.

This one looks DF dom pied but isnt ...it only has colour on the rump area and two very minor spots lower tummy area.
