Posted June 1, 200717 yr i was just wondering if birds can get conjunctivitis? My bird has a red eye, not sure if he scratched it or viral? Any thoughts? It still open but red on the bottom lid.
June 1, 200717 yr I would keep an eye on it if it worsens you will need to get him to the avian vet to see if there is an infection going on
June 1, 200717 yr Try a little warm water and clean the area first then check for foreign particles maybe a scracth or a bit of seed, dust.. keep an eye *pardon the punt hehe on him for 24 hours and signs of swelling or more redness or puss take straight to the vets...
June 1, 200717 yr Hi, it coud be from many causes. Have you tried to clean the area at all? I would try a saline solution (salt in some warm water) or a teabag (tea has some healing properties). If it continues or gets worse an avian vet would be the way to go. You see Ray Butler, don't you? Feathers. Edit: I just checked to see if it was your bird with some missing feathers. This combined with the missing feathers could be a further sign of feather lice or mites. It would be a very good idea to use a lice/mite spray and if it continues definitely see the vet
June 1, 200717 yr I have a bird right now with the inner eyelid swollen and red. Coincidentally the dog has a similar injury and the vet advised I use the same ointment on the bird. One day later the swelling ( bird ) has reduced considerably. Good timing, I guess, with our dog's vet visit and an ointment that was dual purpose.
June 1, 200717 yr Author Thanks everyone, have treated for mites and lice today. Seems to look a bit better. The energy levels certainly arent down!!! I will try the saline wash, thanks for that. Yeah I do see Ray but have yet to see him with the new bird. I guess I'm a bit nervous going back to the vet coz of what happened to Harry, bad memories you know? I'll see what the de-lousing does and if it gets worse I'll take him straight away. These things always happen on a Sunday and coz its a long weekend, ill make doubly sure I dont leave it if it's worse tomorrow.
June 1, 200717 yr I understand not wanting to go back since my dog Brandy passed away at the vets I really haven't wanted to go back there at all and haven't yet but I will need to here soon. Anyways, birds can hid illness and it could be a simple mite/lice issue and what you are doing my resolve the problem. If it doesn't please take him to the avian vet (in fact I think you should know but that is me) because birds DO hid their illness very well I know from personal experience. We can give you all the advice in the world but we are not trained professionals. Good luck.
June 2, 200717 yr Author Hello evryone, well i bit the bullet and took billy to the vet. He thinks its a scrach but treated him with a anti-mite and anti-worm syrup orally and on his neck. His eye this morning is perfect! He also did a gram stain for avian yeast. Feel much happier and Billy is chirping away this morning. Ray thought he was a boy but there is a possibility could be a girl. thought he was adorable. Im glad hes got a clean bill of health. Sharyn
June 2, 200717 yr Glad to hear that and don't you feel 100 time better now knowing what the problem is/was.
June 3, 200717 yr Author Glad to hear that and don't you feel 100 time better now knowing what the problem is/was. Oh yeah what a relief!!!
June 3, 200717 yr good to hear that you took him up the vet you can feel relieved that he has been treated properly and he is healthy
June 3, 200717 yr Fantastic news, Sharyn. The ivermectin that Ray used on his neck really is the best around for lice and mite treatments. I keep some here and every budgie that I get is treated with it during quarantine, before going into the aviary. At least now you know that he is happy and healthy and you now have had a good vet experience Feathers.
