Posted May 31, 200718 yr I recently came to own 3 budgies that have been living together in a single cage for 4 yrs or so. There are 2 males and a single female. I also have another female in separate cage. Would it be too stressful to take one of the males out and house it with my other female? One of the males appears to have bonded more with the female than the other. The one that was less bonded was the one I wanted to move. or would it be easier to put the lone female in with the other three? Any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated as I would like to keep the birds stress levels to a minimum.
May 31, 200718 yr G`Day, The first Question. The size of the cage the 3 budgies in.Is it big anough to take the 4 budgies. If not is the cage with the 1 in it is it suitable for 2 budgies.
May 31, 200718 yr Author The cage with the 3 budgies is too small for 4 but the other cage would be large enough for 2. If the better option is to hold off and get a larger cage and put all four together then thats what I will do. I just wanted to give the other male a chance at the good life with as little stress as possible as the poor bugger has been stuck as the 3rd wheel for about 4 yrs. Edited May 31, 200718 yr by Tal
May 31, 200718 yr Hi Tal, move the extra male and put it in with the lone female, if there is enough room. They can still have out of cage time together if you want. Feathers..
May 31, 200718 yr Before you introduce any birds to your existing flock make sure you quarantine for at least 30 days. Maybe you did this already not sure but I wanted to put that out there. Then personally I would get a cage where I could house them all together that is large enough. It sounds like the cage is big enough just possibly for 1 budgie? So moving him is okay as a temporary solution but not permanent since the others ones will still be cramped together. May 31, 200718 yr Author Thanks for the replies everyone. As to the point Elly made about quarantining the birds thats a very good idea as I have only had them for a couple of weeks and the single female is only a newcomer (couldn't leave it at an odd number ). The best option then is to probably hold off and get a larger cage and house them all together some time next month. I was thinking about doing that anyway and after seeing some of the awesome setups that people here have for thier birds I was sold to the idea. Thanks again for the advice. I'm sure I will be asking for plenty more in the near future.
May 31, 200718 yr I saw your other post that you have a round dome cage gave you some advice on those so when you are looking for a new cage you want long not necessary tall since budgies fly back and forth. Width is much more important then height. You can see my set-up in the Member's Cage Set-ups that is perfect for 4 budgies and I purchased mine off of e-bay for 100.00 U.S. There are many AU member so I know they can give you advise on purchasing a good size cage for a good price. I would personally get a cage that would house 6 budgies therefore you know for a fact they have enough room. Glad you are going to start quarantine that is a very smart decision.
May 31, 200718 yr Author Well this is the cage I plan to get in the next month or so Dimensions: 80cm (L) x 60cm (W) x 170cm (H) or roughly 30" (L) x 24" (w) x 67" (H) Would this be ideal for the amount of budgies I have ? I know its tall rather than wide but I plan on being able to allow the birds time to fly out of the cage.
June 1, 200718 yr Actually that is a wonderful cage though the cage looks tall the width of the cage is nice and wide. Sometimes dimensions of a large cage can make it look narrow. If I am correct others have purchased a cage similar to that and have removed the top so they could turn it into a play gym :budgiedance:.
June 1, 200718 yr Good Luck, i know what it is like with odd numbers I bought 2 birds first then 3 , 4, 5,6 ,7 , 8 one died and i have and 8 on loan hehehehe
June 1, 200718 yr Great looking cage Tal. I am one of the people with that cage and I set mine up without the roof. Instead I covered the top with aviary wire so that I could hang toys and treats from the top. Feathers.
June 1, 200718 yr Author Seeing that makes me feel so bad. I have such a crappy little cage for my birds. Still at least it is only temporary Nice to know that I can take the top off and modify it before I get it too. I suppose I should ask what would be a maximum number for a cage that size as I get the feeling that budgies may be addictive .
June 1, 200718 yr Budgies are VERY addictive. I had 8 budgies in that cage and 8 in a similar one, before I ended up getting an aviary. Unlike a lot of other very cute bird species budgies have some great personalities and interact so well and care for each other so much that they do become very addictive. Feathers.
