Handling

Hello,

Right, I have Two budgies, Boab I've had for around 3 months and Bloo I just got last week. I'm reasonably sure they're both Male but it may be to early to tell with Bloo.

The problems I seem to encounter come more from Boab, who from the first day to now, will not fly near me, land near me, freaks out when my hand goes in the cage, he just really has this issue with me. Now what I'm worried about is; Bloo, the new bird will start to copy Boab and will avoid me at all costs. I'm desperate for them to be tamed and for them to have more faith/trust in me as I really don't enjoy letting them out of their cage from fear that I have to manually catch/lure them back in.

I really don't enjoy putting them back in their cage as I feel I'm not handling them properly. But if I don't do that they'll refuse to go back onto their cage unless they get hungry. I have a cage where they can enter and leave whenever they want but they are so determined to saty out of it.

Oh yeah - I also have a cat. Although she is the friendliest cat ever, I don't think the Budgies realise this yet. So it may be a given that this is the problem, but I'm looking for clarification on the matter.

Any help is good help.

Thanks for your time.

First no matter how friendly your kitty is (and I have 3) never have your birds out with him/her because natural instinct can set in ANYTIME. That is my thoughts. I love MY cats but I don't expect them not to respond to fluttering of bird wings.

Here is a great article from our FAQ section Taming Your Budgie I personally made it up and used my own personal experience with my 2 budgies.

I can tell you training 2 is harder then 1 and you may need to separate them for period of tame for taming if you find you are getting no where. I spent alot of time with Merlin before I introduced him to Pretty but I am assuming you purchased these 2 budgies together.

You can tame them together with the methods described or separate your choice. Either way you need patience and food works miracles as a treat to gain their trust.

Hi, welcome to the BBC forum. I don't think it should be such a huge problem with Bloo copying Boab as, for at least a month, they should be separated for quarantine anyway. This will give you time to work on some training with Bloo. It would be best to have them both in separate areas of the house for that time as well. Reading through the Taming article that Elly gave you a link to should help.

After quarantine, when you put them back together, you may find that Boab will take his cue from Bloo and even copy him, if you are lucky. In the meantime always move your hand slowly when you do the food and water in Boab's cage and when he is more comfortable with that slowly try to offer him millet, as per the article, and he may start to respond. With some budgies it can take months, with others weeks. It depends on how much they were handled before you got them, how old they are, and even the sex of the budgie plays a part.
