Posted May 30, 200717 yr Hello all, I'm Bux from Aberdeen in Scotand. I have recently got Two budgies called Boab & Bloo, and although my knowledge on keeping Budgies is pretty vague I enjoy watching them both fly about the house for fun. Your community will hopefully offer me the information I seek regarding the Angels I keep. http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/981/dscf0004jx8.jpg As you can see from the photo, Boab (yellow/green) is the oldest, I'm not exactly sure how old he is but he's very nervous around Humans and will never interact with me or my Girlfriend. Bloo is the youngest of the two, I got him last week along with a massive new cage for them both. I'm sure bloo will turn out to be a male despite the pet shop owner telling me it was female. Either way I'm happy with them both and look forward to spending my time with them. What I'm here to do is learn the aspects of training them both to be Human friendly, if that's possible. I realise it will take time but while I'm here I hope it can be done. Take care. your photo has been changed to a link as it was larger than our 450 by 450 requirements Edited May 31, 200717 yr by **KAZ**

Boab look like he is at least over a year old and he looks like he rules the house . Your new one Bloo looks like the blue is coming into the cere and if that is the case and it it deepens it will be a male, at first glance it looks female but I am unsure. Now you said you got Bloo just last week and I hate to damper your excitment but you should separate them and start a 30 day quarantine to ensure Bloo is healthy and keep Boab safe from any illness that Bloo could have. Budgies do mask their illness and though they look healthy could be carrying something. Avian vets actually recomment 90 days. Here is information on quarantine and the importance. May 31, 200717 yr I believe that Bloo is a female. and the Big green on .. i wouldn't like to pick him in a fight (Laughing out loud)... Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your budgies
May 31, 200717 yr Hi Bux, welcome again. I saw your other two posts before this one, and I have said in both that your birds should be quarantined. It is really important. I also believe Bloo is a boy, as I said in one post already, as the blue is even and goes right out to the edges of the cere. If it were a girl it would have definite white rings around the nostrils. Feathers.
May 31, 200717 yr Hi Bux and welcome to the site. As other have said Quarantine is important. As to taming it is easier to tame one at a time you can spend the Quarantine time really working on your new one Bloo. I don't believe that a bird is too old to be tamed it just takes more work on your part to gain their trust. despite the pet shop owner telling me it was female Well I'm very shocked to hear a Pet shop employee getting it right! They normally see the blue and tell people they are males. Yes Female baby budgies will have blue or white or mixed pink with white rings around the nares. The fact that the head bars at still to the cere means she isn't old enough to be changing to a the male blue colour. I've had hens that blue as a baby before.
June 1, 200717 yr Hey all, Thanks for the great welcome, I feel really happy that I have found so much out already about my angels. Although one thing is really worrying me and that's the Quarantine part. As I say I've no real experiance with these guys so any help is fantastic. But as to the Quarantine rule, they have already been with each other for around a week now, won't it already be too late to do this? And if so; what precautions should I take regarding Boab's health? Also, I notice that Boab's toe nails are getting long. Not to the point where it will hamper anything he does but in time I dare say it will if they continue to grow. Do I need to manually cut these little piggies? Also (sorry), I think you guys may be right regarding Bloo. She does have a lot of Female type charecteristics and she is a lot smaller than Boab, probably down to age if nothing else I guess, but do Female Budgies out-grow the male Budgie? Again, thanks for all your help so far, I'm so glad I can ask experianced owners about these issues. Regards Bux
June 1, 200717 yr Exhibition or "english type" budgies like your Boah are larger then your pet type budgie or "american" like Bloo. In budgies males and females can vary in size and is not determined by gender like in other animals. Here is article to read Is my budgie English or American? As for quarantine, it is never too late. I would think at this point you will have more problem of them calling for each other. It is one of those lessons learnt and I would at this point watch for any signs of sickness. Signs of a Healthy Budgie As for nails if you have no experience cutting nails on animals then I would take your bird to the vet for the first time so they can show you how. Here is a guide on how to Trimming and Care of Nails. If you like you can post a pics of him perching with a close up of his feet and we can let you know if he needs a trim. Always visit our FAQ Section? as there is so much information. Of course always feel free to ask
