Budgie Vent

I have a 9mth old female named Beep, I just got her at the begining of may from someone in which the novelty wore off. I switched her from a seed to a pellet diet slowly. She is now completly on pellets. She is active, and happy, and talks ALOT. Everything seems normal except her vent gets dirty. She cleans herslf all the time. we don't have an avian vet here.and I will never take a bird to an unexperienced vet. Any ideas or opinions would be great.

Thank you very much

Jackie :hap:

Welcome aboard

No vet is worse then a vet so you may want to get her checked out did you check our Avian Vet Look-up in the FAQ's you may be surprised there may be someone by you.

Kaz made a good point about her nutrition and I advised you to read those articles. Merlin gets a little bit of everything :hap:, including pellets.

We would love to see pics of her in the Budgie Pics if you like to post a picture of her.

When I say completely on a pellet diet I mean a tropican budgie mix it does have seed as well as fruits and other goodies. She eats a variety of fruit and veggies. I have completly removed her from a strickly seed diet. Which she was obviously on since weened. I live in Northwest Territiories in Canada with now only 1 vet here for about a 500 miles or so, and he does sled dogs and cats. Not much of an option. I might just chat with a vet down south and see what I can do :hap: and as for the picture, still working on it!! (Laughing out loud) very computer illiterate!!

Thanks for the replys!!

:ausb: Hi Jackie, sorry you are "way up there" but at least it is summer now and you aren't baking like down here (not to mention it is so pretty there!). Better that you feed your budgie a high quality food mix and beef it up with pellets, fresh vegetables and a bit of fresh fruits. The tropican diet with dried/fruits/veggies should probably just be given as a treat food. Don't worry, I am computer illiterate as well but I finally figured the picture thing out. :)

Have you changed her diet lately had her try a new food?

You can see if this helps to find an avian vet by you Avian Vet Look-up

A healthy budgie will not have a dirty vent. What do the feces look like? Are they well formed or loose? Does there seem to be excess liquid in them? Excess liquid is different from diarrhea - the solid portion of the stool is not there with diarrhea, but if the bird is urinating excessively the solid portion will still be formed. What color are the feces?

Check here for posting photos. If you are still having troubles, let me know (pm me) and I will walk you through it.

Hi Jackie, welcome to the BBC forum. I hope you like it here and stick around. :D

As you only got the budgie this month and have changed her diet, that is more than likely what the problem is. No one packet of food can have everything needed by a budgie for good health. Despite what it says on the packet. I would still include seed as well as that mix, even if it has seed in it, and I would also still give fresh vegies.

I hope she comes good soon.

Feathers.

By the way, Rainbow, you have a club now, is that new? :D

Her droppings are normal, olive color, with white, no excessive liquid. I have had Large birds and they were never on just a pellet diet, I offered everything like fresh veggies and fruits, as I do with Beep just in smaller portions of course.
