Rope Perches

I just need a little advise. I found a company, that makes ropes, I need to get some for the aviary we are planing to build. They sell ropes in lots of sizes and materials.

What material do you think is the best to use in an aviary? I can choose from: Flax, Hemp or Cotton. The rest of materials are plastic.

Thank you :)

I personally would choose hemp over cotton rope. Not sure what Flax is, so I can't comment.

I found the word FLAX on the internet (dictionary). Maybe it's wrong, it says this:

Flax:

1. any plant of the genus Linum, esp. L. usitatissimum, a slender, erect, annual plant having narrow, lance-shaped leaves and blue flowers, cultivated for its fiber and seeds.

2. the fiber of this plant, manufactured into linen yarn for thread or woven fabrics.

3. any of various plants resembling flax.

Or it might be called Tow, should be similar to sisal (or maybe it's the same, I'm not sure :) )

Anyway I think the hemp rope is good. I have some cotton ropes and they get very dirty and aren't easy to clean. And the budgies bite them, so there are strings hanging off of it. The hemp ones might be a bit stronger.

oh, I see... in my aviary, I've used sisal rope, and my budgies have managed to chew through it.. hehe... but that's okay, it doens't leave stringy bits like you said about the cotton, so no risk of my little ones feet getting tangled in it, or even worse, their little neck...

I think I will get the hemp rope. I'm just hoping it's not too hard for their feet. I'll see, maybe I should get about 2-3 meters of each kind and see, which one is the best :)

Make sure whatever you get is natural, many ropes are coated in weather proof stuff so they last longer. When i got some sisal rope for my aviary there was the choice of natural or treated.

They are not treated, the breeder I have the contact from, uses these ropes for her birds and says it's good and cheap :D . But I will rather ask them before I order it :)

I'd go with the hemp one... Only because I was at the vets and seen the pics of rope toy and they had to pull peices out of the birds crops.... GROSS picture and thought, but saying that I had no choice and have cotton i just watch out for the stringy bits and cut them off
