Posted May 29, 200717 yr Hi everybody Im from Perth. I unfortunatly lost my little boy, Harry to avian yeast infection. I missed him so much that I bought a new little baby, I called him/her Billy. Hubby swears hes a girl, I vote boy. He is eight weeks old and loves my wedding rings. I am currently on holidays so the babys getting a lot of attention. I am still quite emotionally scarred from what happened to Harry (he died whilst I was cuddling him) so Im hoping Billy will stay healthy. Is there anything i can do to stop the baby biting my fingers? He just seems to want to nibble anything! Sharyn :redalbino:
May 29, 200717 yr First off all Hi and welcome, I am not too sure about the biting side of things however another member will answer your questions i am sure.. have you got a picture ( see FAQ on how to post ) of your new little one we will be able to tell if it is a boy or girl... Nothing better then knowing better then your hubby : ) usually females have white rings around their nostrils...... Good luck with your new addition
May 29, 200717 yr I would say that your budgie is female if it is nibbling all the time. The males are more docile.I'm not sure how you can stop it from biting.I only handle my budgie with a judges stick.
May 29, 200717 yr Baby budgie tent to nibble a lot regardless of gender they are checking out their environment. If he (just taking your word) bites too hard you can give him a small fight by droping your hand slightly, just enough that he has to focus on balance. Some have also found a time out/in cage period helpful. Welcome to the site I hope you can show us some pictures of your little one.
May 29, 200717 yr Happy to have you here. There are a few of us from Perth and every now and then we get together for a chinwag of an afternoon. Anything that worries you about your new baby, just ask. Nothing is too much trouble to help with. Cheers Kaz Edited May 29, 200717 yr by **KAZ**
May 29, 200717 yr being he/she is so young a picture would be good because at this point their cere is probably pink either way it is the intensity of the pink that counts so a picture would be good. Taking that picture in natural light without a flash is best. As for the nibbling your budgie nibbles say no gently and move your hand away or give it something else to nibble. A cute thing now could turn into a bad habit over time. So I would deter this if you don't like it. You mentioned your other budgie Harry died. I am so sorry :hap:, I lost Pretty almost 3 months ago and he wasn't even 2 years old so I understand how horrible it is. He died in my hands too. If you don't mind we can help give you tips and such if you can give us some description on what exactly happened. How old was Harry? What were the symptoms Harry had or where there none? What do you feed your budgies? Do you supplement with veggies, pellets, fruits etc...or only seed based food? Do you give your budgies vitamins? Well that is a start with the questions but the more we know the more we can assist you. We also have a fanastic FAQ section with so many questions and answers about taming, budgie behavior, breeding and more you can check it out here BBC FAQ's Edited May 29, 200717 yr by Elly
May 29, 200717 yr Hi Sharyn, welcome to the BBC forum, lovely to have another West Aussie on board. I was saddened to read about Harry and hope that you have a brighter future with Billy. Feathers.
May 30, 200717 yr Hello, welcome to the forum and may you learn MUCH new info (I have) and make new friends! :greenb:
May 30, 200717 yr Author Thank you so much everyone for your welcome. I will try and add a picture of little Billy for you to see. He has a very pink swollen cere, which apparently can be a sign it is male? Harry died from megabacteria or avian yeast infection. He initially started with vomitting and diarrhoea and for three months we battled to keep him alive with amphotericin (anti-fungal med) I took him to Ray Butler in Applecross, he was excellent. Anyway, we went on holiday a couple of weeks ago and Harry got really ill before we left. By the time we got back he had a chest infection and died two days later. It was horrible. So now we have Billy. Harry was about 2 when he died. http://www.general.uwa.edu.au/~ajf/temp/bi...006%20small.JPG I also have 2 weiros, Monty and Marsoe. Monty talks and sings funky town. Anyway, Thanks again, can anyone tell me how to get Billy's photo on my profile? Sharyn :ausb: :ausb: Edited May 30, 200717 yr by **KAZ**

May 30, 200717 yr Author Thanks for that! I now have Billy on my profile. Yeah, the megabacteria was terrible. I think Im a bit paranoid now, making sure Billy is healthy. But he seems active and is trying to talk only after 4 days of being with us! I m on annual leave so he's had me here most days. Sharyn
May 30, 200717 yr if you want you can always get an avian vet good health check-up I did that with Merlin after Pretty died because I was scared he had what Pretty died from. They did a gram stain, a fecal test and a physical exam. I am sure Billy is healthy though and he is a doll.
May 30, 200717 yr Author Thanks Elly! We plan on taking him back to the Avian vet at 3 months of age. Just for peace of mind and a general check up. Billy has a trick, he picks up the corner of his cage paper, wraps himself up like a cone and then lays on his back with his legs in the air!! Hubby calls him turtle. Its just so funny!I bought him a cat ball with a bell inside and he loves rolling it around the cage. Sharyn
May 30, 200717 yr Sharyn, Billy is a very good looking male budgie He sounds like such a character, the way he roll shimself up sounds hilarious. I look forward to getting to know you both better. Ray Butler is a very good avian vet as you have found. Feathers.
May 30, 200717 yr Thanks for that guys! SO the vote is that Billy is a male? Yep. Looks like a boy to me too
May 30, 200717 yr Author Well, hubby may lose the bet! Its funny to see him and the bird- he's besotted! My mum reckons we need babies! Its a good alternative until we finish studying. Thanks for everyones replies, this forums great. Oh by the way, Billy finally ate appple! hOORAY Likes green, you see not red. FUSSY! Sharyn
May 30, 200717 yr Billy is going to be one spoiled little man. He looks very young in the picture do you go to a breeder or a pet shop? I would say he would have only just left his parents / breeding box.
May 30, 200717 yr Author Billy is going to be one spoiled little man. He looks very young in the picture do you go to a breeder or a pet shop? I would say he would have only just left his parents / breeding box. We got him from Birdworld, a shop in Perth. He was the youngest of the babies at the shop and is about 8 weeks old I was told. But they dont sell them until they have been eating seed for 2 weeks on their own. He was handraised so he is very tame and craves coming out of the cage when he sees me or hubby. This is one spoilt bird, the best kind i reckon!!! We just love our animals. We have a dog, 2 fish 2 tiels and Billyboy Sharyn
