Posted May 28, 200717 yr I did not know where to put this so I put this here. I am in school and my sleeping schedule dose not fit the needed time for a budgies sleeping schedule. What should I do? My bed time is 9:00 p.m and I wake up for school at 5:40 a.m. Today I have read of another website that a budgie needs at least 10 hours of sleep time daily. I wanted to ask every one on this helpful website to help me with this problem. I don't know if the 80 minutes would really affect the budgie that much. I just want to make sure. Thanks Budgielover
May 28, 200717 yr i think that would be a little probelm because budgies should get 12 hours sleep, 10 is minimum and some even upto 14 hours.
May 28, 200717 yr Author Thanks so what should I do. I can't let it not get enought sleep. that would be bad. Can't a deficency in sleep make a budgie pluck feathers, scream, and bite. They become grumpy like people whan we don't get enought sleep. I would not injoy that.
May 28, 200717 yr can't you have your birds sleep earlier and wake up later?? In the evening just put a towel ontop of your cage at 7:30 so that they fall to sleep at eight. And in the morning wake them up right before you go to school, not when you wake up.
May 28, 200717 yr shorter days will throw your budgies into breeding antics so to speak. What you can do is cover them earlier so cover them at 7pm and then uncover them at 5 will be okay. I personally cover Merlin at 7:30pm even if it is light because he squawks to be covered. He is uncovered at around 7-8 in the AM.
May 29, 200717 yr Author I guess I am going to have to wake up better. In the morning My mom turns on my light to wake me up. I guess I will put my tv to wake me up quietly and uncover the cage as I walk out. I will also cover it earlier. One more question Will noise effect budgies ability to sleep? Budgielover
May 29, 200717 yr yes, when Merlin is covered and I come in the computer room he will start chirping especially if I am talking You can put a sheet over the cage and then a heavier dark blanket to keep the light out too. I say a sheet first so their nails don't get stuck in the blanket if they go on the side of the cage.
May 29, 200717 yr I don`t think a budgie, will lack sleep. They can have a snooze, during the day if they need it.The lights in my avery, don't turn off till 10.oopm I haven't seen any problems, with the birds,
May 29, 200717 yr Once your bird gets into the routine of your sleep/wake schedule, there shouldn't be much problem. If your room is quiet during the day while you are out, your bird will nap to make up for any sleep missed. I think if you have a bedtime routine every night and follow it, your bird will sleep when it needs to. Wild birds sleep when it gets dark outside and wake when the sun comes up. Getting up at 5:40 am in the summer probably won't be an issue, as I hear the outdoor birds start to wake up around 4 am here! Believe me, my birds hear them, but they don't wake and move around until it starts to get light. I think you will find your bird would rather stay up and go to sleep when you do, for the company. You will be the substitute flock, so it will be natural for him to sleep when you do, play when you do, and eat when you do. If you are quiet in the morning, you can uncover him, change food, water, and cage paper without him waking too much. It may take awhile for him to become that comfortable with you, but it will eventually happen. I can do the morning routine with my birds in almost complete darkness, and they do not mind because they know it is me, and this happens every morning. I have had them all for years, so they are used to it. Most of the time they don't bother but to open one sleepy eye halfway, then go back to sleep. 10 - 12 hours of sleep is ideal for birds that live near the equator, as the days roughly equal the nights, and many many parrots native habitat is near the equator. That is where that number comes from. If you find that your bird seems sleepy much of the time, on edge, or begins screaming you may have to re-evaluate your routine, and tweak it to suit your needs. Your routine will be affected by how new your budgie is also. If you haven't had him or her long, it will be harder to tell whether your bird's actions are the result of a little bit of fear still, or whether there is a lack of sleep issue. If you've had your bird for a number of years and you are both very comfortable with each other, then it is easier to tell what a behavior change means.
May 29, 200717 yr Guess what, I get up at 0515 everyday and go to bed between 2100 and 2200. Cover my birds at 2100 or just cut the lights if it is too warm. I know in the winter that they go back to sleep after I leave and my Mother, who lives downstairs, says that there are many QUIET intervals during the day. THEY ALL COME TO LIFE AND START SCREECHING WHEN I ARRIVE HOME!!! There are expectations.

In all honesty my birds don't sleep that long maybe 9 - 10 hrs and they aren't ferrel.... I do cover them especially the outside aviary as it is freezing at night... Just do your best
May 29, 200717 yr I agree with Macka and Rainbow. You and your bird are settled into a routine. Budgies sleep in patches during the day and when left alone your budgie will snooze when he feels like it during the day.

May 29, 200717 yr Do what you feel is best , if you stick to a routine your budgie will get used to it and they will tell you by their behavior what they need. I have never read a budgie to become wild because they didn't get enough sleep.
June 1, 200717 yr I usually cover the cage anytime from 10 pm to 1 am, and uncover anytime from 6.15 am - 9.30 am, but it's not a problem. If I uncover at 6.15, Konrad simply turns around, puts her head into her wing and ignores me til around 9 am or so, she isn't really a early morning bird so to speak And in Sweden, summertime, we only get about 1 hour of darkness during the night, so a cover for the cage is well needed hehe. I wouldn't worry too much, my bird takes a few naps during the day to make up for lost sleep as well
