Posted May 17, 200717 yr Hey all i have been looking to find a site/ page that shows not tells me how to give the birds their Extras... I know you pick it and put it in the cage/ Aviary but what do they look like I've read dandilions ( wet the Beds ) or the ones we use to blow as a kid.. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t200/Ne.../Picture124.jpg I have this grass that is growing and they love it http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t200/Ne.../Picture121.jpg But what about these http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t200/Ne.../Picture123.jpg It's like a wheat looking thing http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t200/Ne.../Picture122.jpg I don't want to feed it to them until i know Any help would be great
May 17, 200717 yr Yes your first picture is of true Dandelion, which is a good & safe weed, just be careful where you get all weeds from, close to busy roads can often not be good because of built up levels of lead from old super petrol & other contaminates from car fumes, also areas which have access from dogs [people walking their dogs etc]. There is also what is known at false Dandelion or Flat weed, which is similar, it’s also probably safe as I have fed it to rabbits & guinea pigs, but I’m not sure, I have never fed it to birds. The other pictures of grasses, I’m afraid, aren’t good enough to recognise them. Maybe they are some of the millet type grasses, but they appear from your photos [they are not big enough or close enough to be sure] that already the seeds may have fallen from them; the seed heads of grasses is what Budgies like the most. There is a common pasture grass Setaria that they like & is safe & other wild millet looking grasses that are good & safe. I think that most grasses are safe & even without their seed heads, Budgies will chew them & get juices from them…young sorghum plants are toxic to some animals so be careful of them. I even feed young Farmers Friends & the green seed heads to my birds, as they are common in my area & they like them. Edited May 17, 200717 yr by Norm
May 17, 200717 yr I'm not sure what the grasses were in your pictures but a good way to get grass that is safe for them is to plant your own.. I get a small pot of soil and sprinkle over some of the bird seed mix, keep it moist and its only then a matter of days before it starts to shoot.. takes a while to grow but at least i know it cant be too bad for them since its been germinated from the seed that they eat
May 18, 200717 yr Author That is what I was leading towards, but the other seeds ( gone thru so many brand ) are Seeding they grow into long grass and that is it , Might try agin with this new brand
December 31, 20186 yr i have two adorable budgies called Sky and Kiwi. I just got them some grass that was growing in my yard and i am absolutely sure that i had not put ANY chemicals in the soil. I researched it and saw that it was called "Rough Bluegrass". My budgies absolutely love it when i bring home native grasses for them to eat. For the picture i think it is edible (it looks like some sort of wild wheat) but i am not sure because it is not a very clear picture of grass.
