May 31, 200717 yr Author I'll try to book appointment with the vet for tomorrow but I am scared to hear more bad news. Today she has a scratch on her lump, and I wonder if there is something as antiseptic needs to be applied. I am afraid that trip will stress her and cause more trouble beside every time I go to the vet I come with more bad news plus over $100 bill. I am really stressed and I don't know what to do. Can we use people's antiseptic like Savlon or Dettol on birds's sores??
May 31, 200717 yr Sorry, no, good luck at the vet with Sarah. I can appreciate your vet bills but it makes me feel better knowing I tried. :greenb:
May 31, 200717 yr Author Once I read about first aid kit for the birds, I can't find it. just I want to know what antiseptic do you use for wounded birds? I don't want her lump to become infected with some new germs
May 31, 200717 yr Hi, this is the link for the first aid kit:   http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...=151&artlang=en   Feathers.

June 2, 200717 yr Author I went to the vet yesterday and I am afraid there is no good news. even the risk from the surgery is greater than what expected earlier due to the nature of the lump. Sara is still happy not showing any signs of illness (other than having this ball in her way all the time) the vet gave me an information sheet for Bird's Emergencies, I know most of this info is available at the FAQs but I would like to share it with you anyway. http://www.birdvet.com.au/birdcare/Bird%20...emergencies.htm the most interesting thing was about "the fluids which you can give the bird....."
June 2, 200717 yr Author What did he advise you? She said I have to weigh the cons and pros the surgery is risky because of the anesthetic from one hand and also she thinks that Sara might get a stroke one or two hours after the operation because the fat level in sara's blood is high another thing because the lump has liquid in it and the body is using some of this liquids, the body will not handle loosing that much liquid in one go. I asked her what would you do if it is your bird, she said thank goodness it is not mine. now if we leave her this way, the bacteria inside the dead centre is increasing until it goes into the blood stream then it is matter of hours and Sara will go. i HATE to think of that. my daughters are refusing the idea of taking Sara into a surgery and not getting her back, they say if she is going to die we would like to be with her without putting her in more stress and pain. my heart is broken and I don't know what to do.
June 2, 200717 yr I am s sorry that you are in such a difficult position at the moment with Sara. I think, if it were my bird, I would probably leave her while she is happy and not bothered by the lump, but would probably take her back to the vet to send her over the rainbow bridge once she started being badly affected by it. Â Thank you very much for the information that you have posted for us. Some of it is information that we don't have in our FAQ's and we may include some in reviews. Â Â Feathers.
June 2, 200717 yr I agree with feathers that is what I would do too as long as she is happy but once she starts to suffer the decision would be made. Though it is easier to say this then to do it I know my own personal experiences with my dogs, cats, and even rabbit. Â Sepsis is what she is talking about if the bacteria gets into her blood system.

I am an animal lover and I had all sort of pets and creatures but I wouldn't imagine in my life that a pet can be THAT close to your heart as Sara is, she is such a special girl with a wonderful nature. She treats each member in the family 100% different, and we all adore her.  I agree with feathers that is what I would do too as long as she is happy but once she starts to suffer the decision would be made. You are right, I think this is what we will do as long as she is happy, but what I didn't understand is what to expect when she is sick, is she going to be in pain? will she suffer?
June 2, 200717 yr You are right, I think this is what we will do as long as she is happy, but what I didn't understand is what to expect when she is sick, is she going to be in pain? will she suffer  Only you will know the answers to the questions when it happens. Being so close to her you will know when all is not well.  Like many animal owners I have had to make a similar decision when I had a dog with cancer some years ago. She gave me all the love in the world, everything she had to give, but the pain was in her eyes. When I made the awful decision and took her to the vet for the very last time the vet told me it had started to affect her lungs and had we left it any longer she would have been in a lot of pain. In his opinion my timing was perfect, until that point it was just a strange lump to her.  You will do what is right for her, because you do love her.   Feathers. Edited June 2, 200717 yr by feathers
June 4, 200717 yr I am so sorry to read the update on this post, Sara is so lucky to have you with her at the end, you have done all that you can do. Hopefully she will die peacefully but you will know if it is time to take her in, HUGGOS (that's what I used to say to my dog, he loved that word).
June 6, 200717 yr Author How is sweet Sara doing? :greenb: She is still going, the lump developed some black spots on it and Sara is trying to clean that up. I am putting Iodine solution once a day to kill any outside Germs and to disinfect the scratches. Sara is still happy even though she is trying not to fly as much, or may be it is just me I am taking her wherever she wants because I feel bad when I see her flying in that zigzag path. :hap: she is eating and pooing normally. thank you very much for your concern, it is nice to think that there is people who care like you Phoebe, Thanks
June 6, 200717 yr good to hear she is still happy , keep us updated on her she is a very special budgie to our forums.
June 6, 200717 yr Good to hear. Â You will find on this board that a lot of budgies that we hear about regularly or that have pictures posted become BBC budgies. They feel like an extension of our own budgie families and we become quite attached to them. After having gone through this journey with Sara, she has become a BBC adopted budgie. Â Â Feathers.
June 7, 200717 yr Feathers said it very well, if an owner cares and loves their birds (child, partner, animal) and goes that extra mile, it shows! And we cross our feathers and fingers and hope for the best for them and their owner for their dedication. Hope Sara is still status quo! :ausb:
June 7, 200717 yr Author Today sara has a wound on her lump with a bit of blood, I cleaned it and put Iodine, I am not sure whether this is a scratch she caused it or the infection start coming to the outside. I thought I will post some photos of my Sara at her good times before having this lump.  This Sara sleeping on my hubby's tummy http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/orca_01/IMG_0011.jpg sleeping again http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/orca_01/Fun0005.jpg not any more http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/orca_01/100_0005.jpg now it's eating time http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/orca_01/IMG_0164.jpg okay what are you looking at, can't you see we're having a nap here?? http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/orca_01/IMG_0154.jpg  the other female was Birdy which I lost last July. and the boy is Tim-Tam He is driving Sara crazy this is why I separated them. He is killing her with his love and kisses finally I can't resist posting this photo which I took yesterday when she had a bath in my parsley. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/orca_01/IMG_0067.jpg Thank you everyone for your thoughts, it is much appreciated.
June 7, 200717 yr Thank you for sharing Sara with us she is such a special budgie to our forums. I love her pictures she reminds me of Pretty whom I lost 3 months ago
June 7, 200717 yr Sara is a really beautiful budgie, she certainly is a big part of the family, by the looks of it. Â Â Feathers.
June 8, 200717 yr Author Sara is not well today, she is fluffed up and tired, i put a desk lamp near her cage, the weather is awful today it is cold and stormy, so I don't now if her health going down or it is the cold. I didn't see her eating much, and her poo is a bit runny and lighter in color it is kind of light green. I hope she is going to be okay.
June 8, 200717 yr ((hugs)) it sounds like she may be going down hill...I know you want to hear something different. Keep her warm it may perk her up but with her poos being runny and light green (unless she ate something different) doesn't sound good. Give her love, kisses as you are if she like millet give this to her too.
June 9, 200717 yr I am so sorry that Sara is not doing well today but unfortunately, we knew that she would start to have really bad days. Doesn't make it any easier to deal with but we knew it was coming. Hope she is feeling better now and spoil her rotten, millet, her favourite foods, anything!
