New Aviary

Featured Replies

Its been sitting in the backyard in about 50 pieces for a couple of weeks... yesterday we finally put it all together! :D

Its a nice long Hex + Flight. At the moment I have both my Budgies and Cockatiels in it to see if they can co-habitate happily (so far so good). Occupants are 8 budgies and 5 cockatiels.

This is the Aviary:

And this is what my backyard looks like now! So many aviaries :D (scuse the mess, we hadn't cleaned up after the construction yet!)

The Budgie and Cockatiel aviaries will be used for breeding now. :(

We don't have any at the moment, but baby season is coming up so we should have some orphans soon! Photos then :D

Awesome avairy! I love it!! I've never heard of a possum aviary before, what a great idea! Do you raise babies and then let them go or is it just something new that you are starting?? ;)

We are wildlife carers, we raise orphans (parents killed in car accidents etc) and then release them. :P

Its a bird aviary but has allot more branches so they can climb every where. I will get some internal photos for you ;)

Here are some pics of former possums :)

They are gorgeous ;) I have raised wallabies and kangaroos from furless balls of skin no bigger than a golfball in size, but never possums. Pretty much the same thing. Its a tough job but very rewarding. :)

It is a very tough job sometimes! Last seasons babies all got Intusuception and had to be euthanaised ;) (an incurable type of bowel blockage, normally due to bad diet at a very young age (probably due to the drought here, the mums couldn't produce good milk)). It was very hard! Hopefully this seasons babies will do allot better.

The first three photos are priceless. So very adorable.

feathers.

Wow, great aviaries you have there!!! :budgiedance: I like the new one too. I hope your cockatiels and budgies co habitate alright in there.

and awww, what cute possums!!!! I want a cuddle.. hehe.. Binnie looked so very small in the picture.. hehe...

Can you actually legally keep possum in Australia? Just wondering.

No, not as pets. We can only have them while we are rehabilitating them!

We are getting a baby poss this morning! Phone rang 6.45, he will be here soon. :budgiedance:

UPDATE

Bad news, he was only 22g - approx the same development as an 6-8week feotus and is unlikely to survive.

Here is a photo (we take them for records), some may find it disturbing so only click the link if you are sure you want to see it. He is very 'humanoid' at this age.

Me too. I have raised three wallabies that started out looking like that...same size and lack of development. They all survived. I use to keep them warm in a sock or a beanie (woollen cap ). :hap:

Maybe Kangaroos/Wallabies are hardier that Possums?

We took him straight out to the shelter for a more experienced carer to raise, we have in the past raised 50g+ babies but he would require feeding while I am at school and he is too little to take with me.

Unfortunately the RSPCA has a cut off weight for baby possums, all babies under 50g are euthanaised. Most babies raised from this age have either not survived, or been weak and unreleasable adults. So this little boy was put too sleep. :)

:ausb:

This is what I was told:

1. At that size their jaws are still fused and is extremely difficult to teach them too suck.

2. His mother was electrocuted and it is likely he too received a shock and would not survive the night.

3. Possums raised from that size often have Ear and Eye problems later in life.

4. He would have none of the skills required of a male possum and if successfully raised to adult hood he would most likely be killed by a male possum where he was released. Females are not so aggressive and are mostly left alone by other possums.

5. The RSPCA gets so many orphaned possums in the ACT that they have to try and save only those most likely to live and be successful in the wild.

So I am sad... but at least he is back with his mum. :D

Thats very sad :D I am sure there probably ARE differences between kangaroo and wallaby babies to possums. A great pity. But you are doing a good thing. I will foster kangaroos again someday. Its very rewarding. :D

We can't foster kangaroos in the RSPCA! They are considered pests and any babies found inside the border are supposed to be euthanaised! :D So we sneak them over the border into NSW for WIRES to raise... :D

:( I'm sad to hear about the little baby boy although as you said, at least he is back with his mother now :ausb:

hahaaa i can so picture you 'smuggling" baby roos over the border :D I'm mid process of extending my back garden so maybe in time i will consider being a "foster mum" again :D it is VERY rewarding seeing the wee lil ones grow up :)
