Brood Patch?

Featured Replies

Dumb question I know, but where exactly is it? Down low by the hens vent or up higher on her tummy?

My Hen and cockbird have been mating like mad for about 2 weeks now. The feathers just above her vent are gone in a small patch. I am * ASSUMING * This is the brood patch I have read about. If my info is correct I should be expecting eggs at any time.

My information and experience is that a "brood patch" is where the hen plucks a row of feathers in a vertical line down her front to create better contact and warmth with her eggs when incubating. A few of mine do that, not all. I dont know about the feather loss you are experiencing and if it is related to a "brood patch" as I understand it to mean

This is in fact a straight line right in the middle above her vent. Does that sound right to you? Maybe 1/4 inch in length.

Every budgie being different and everyone of them preparing for parenthood in different ways, ....try not to overthink the whole process. Just let it happen. If you want to look for signs, look for a lump near her vent and more time in the nestbox and you will have your first egg shortly after that. :)

And HUGE big green poos a day or two before the egg appears.
