Hello everyone, first of all , I love this site!! Great job! Secondly I'm new to this site and relatively new to budgie care. I have had great experiences with breeding and caring for larger

birds, like cockatoos, cockatiels and lovebirds, but have never had a budgie. My new little budgie is a young one and was given to me by someone in which the the novelty wore off. I chose to take her for my love of birds. Her/ his age is unknown but was said to be under a year. *Beep* is not trained nor does he/she come out of her cage. I would like to change that. She has been with us for a week now and she is the cutest little thing. Beep loves to be talked to, but I would love to be able to have her out and around us. Beep is adjusting well and has sunk into our family like a natural. If you have any ideas for me on how to get her alittle more socialable it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Talk talk talk to her (Laughing out loud) as you are.

Is she hand tamed? If so have her out with you as much as possible.

You really do the same thing with the little ones as you do the big ones but sometimes it takes the littles one to warm up more to humans .

By the way welcome to our site, we have a lot of great members, a wonderful FAQ section and presently we are working on a taming article -_-.

Do you have a picture of the little one maybe we can help out out with her age.

unfoutunatly Beep is not hand tamed. But she is inquisitive and she is interested and she isn't to skiddish but she just doesnt want to be handled so I am taking it slow and not pushing myself on her

I'll post a picture as soon as I know how! (Laughing out loud)

Hi Jackie, welcome to the BBC forum, this is a fantastic place to be if you love budgies (and other birds). It is great that Beep has settled in so well. Now you just need to get her used to your hand being in the cage. Hang a little millet spray in the cage every couple of days, so she gets used to this yummy treat. Talk to her whenever you are around her and always move your hand carefully around in her cage when you change the food and water so that she isn't scared of your hand.

Once she is used to you and used to your hand being in the cage start to offer millet holding it between your fingers so that she has to step onto you to eat it, but keep your hand still while she is there.

This could take a week or two, but it is more likely to take a month or two as she is older. Just don't give up and be consistant in the way you handle her.

First you need to build trust with her and then you can go to the next step. Here are some ideas :D.

Building Trust: This is the first step when y ou are working on taming. Your budgie needs to know that you will not hurt it in anyway. The best way to gain trust is to work with your budgie daily. Many articles say 15 minutes a day is all you need I have found that to be untrue. I always advise members to spend as much time as you can on a daily basis with your budgie. The more you work with your budgie on a daily basis the faster you will build trust with your new friend. When your budgie trusts you it is a wonderful feeling.

There are many different ways you can form a trusting relationship with your budgie. Talk to them all the time when they are in and out of their cage. In fact when Pretty was in a smaller cage and I could move it I would take him from room to room with me he was always by us. Do not push training if you find they are fearful of a certain action stop immediately. They are simply not ready. Food is a huge motivator and by using their favorite snack such as millet it speeds up the bond. If your budgie first doesn’t eat from you that is okay they don’t know if you are giving them poison you will notice the more you talk with them and are around them they will relax and before you know it may take a nibble. It takes time don’t expect them to automatically eat they are not like dogs that snatch food they must trust you first. Always feed your budgie from your fingers many times you will see pictures of people feeding budgies from their mouth this is actually harmful for the bird. Human saliva has bacteria that can get your budgie sick.

(this is a part of my article I am writing up for the taming section (Laughing out loud) so bare with me as I continue to write and get this edited by feathers and posted soon) :D
