Day 5 Of Baytril

okay! My liitle Oscar is half way through his medication. He is brighter, playing with his toys, pooing brown poo and they are normal (where as before they were black and runny), no sneezing and is talking a lot more. So he is on the mend. However he is still looking a little puffed up. Is that because he is pissed off and stressed or because he still has something wrong. I know his vet is on duty for the next 3 days. Should I take him back and have him checked out or just leave it for now and see if any of the other symptoms arise?

If you are going to take him back to the vets tomorrow, put a bit of paper under his perch tonight. To catch the droping & take them to the vet when you go & they can test them for any problems he might have. :feedbirds:

Bird don't become pissed that is not an emotion they can become angered from teasing and bit or out of fear.

BUT stressed or still under the weather is most likely why he is still fluffed up.

You can call your avian vet and tell them your concern and see what they say. They may want him in for a quick look over again to ensure he isn't loosing weight and give him an exam.

Giving them a call would be a good idea. Depending on what his issue was, the doctor may be expecting different rates of improvement. He may be satisfied with how he's doing, or he might want him to be doing better. If he thinks that the fluffiness means he's not getting well fast enough, he may want to see him again to refine the treatment. Otherwise, it could just be the stress of it all and bringing him in would be unnecessary. Let the vet decide. And yes, putting clean paper under his perch to bring in is good idea too. Good luck (and whatever you do, don't stop the baytril unless the vet says *L*)!!

oh and quick question are you going to an avian vet or regular vet, that does make a difference on the course of treatment taken (sometimes)

Avian Vet, she said something about him being very young when we got him because we have had him for a while but he still has not had his first malt. Maybe I should go to a different avian vet? They are just hard to find. I had to ring 5 different vets in my area just to find one.

birds go through their first moult by the time they are 3-4 months

does he have the baby bar lines down on his head down to his cere?

Do you have a picture of him?

Yes he has lines going all the way down to his cere and his beak was black until yesterday. He's been scraping it on his perch like mad after I give him his drops. He feels like he is putting on weight. I think I'll just take him after lunch. The vet said bring him down when ever, even if it is for a check up. My husband will kill me because it's another $50 on a bird who cost us $15 to get in the first place. It kinda sucks Took my dog in a 2 weeks ago for his shots, some more medicated shampoo and a genral check up and it was $70. I just hope once we get all This under control we'll never have to take him again.

your vet is right he was very young maybe even too young to adopt and this is probably most likely why he got sick from not being weaned properly, the stress of leaving his family too soon.

Budgies are ready to leave their parents around 7-10 wks and their beak is changed by then or they may just have a streak of black or tipped. He sounds like he just hit that mark.

Where did you get him from?

What is his diet like?

Heres a photo of him. It was taken a week ago and we'd had him for about 4 weeks. I got him from a pet store. I'm going to have him take the tests tomorrow. I hope it comes up with something and does not kill him. Augh!!! I'm so attached to him already. We've had him for over a month now. The Avian Vet I'm going to tomorrow lectures at the Vet Uni here in perth specializing in birds. I have to drive for an hour to get there but hey my vet said he is the best in perth. Then for treatment he'll get my vet up here all the stuff to treat him with.

Has anyone got a good excuse to give to their husbands about missing Cash????? :D

It sounds very much like your baby was far too young to have left its parents and been sold to a pet store. They have to have time to learn to eat and to gain some size and weight. That seems to be half your problem...he is far too young. Best of luck with him. If your vet was an avian or "bird vet" he would have everything he needed to treat your bird with already.

hi , yes from your picture he looks quite young ,pretty though :D

vets are very expensive , hope all works out okay :D

cheeky

What a sweetie and I believe this is why he is sick as Kaz said he was way to young. I would contact your pet store manager, the RSPCA or report them as if this is happened to you it is happening to others.

Bless you for not just trotting back and giving him back he really needs your love and help.

As for the avian vet I don't believe vets are expensive when you look at the long term. In the short term sure you need your money but who doesn't right. :D

Just think about how much you we spend on other things that are not a total necessity. We say we don't do it but we all do :D. In the end we will find the money to make sure that our beloved pet is taken care of. The worse thing about budgies and other smaller pets is that they are considered throw away pets and not worth putting vetting into. In reality your budgie may live longer then your dog or cat. :D We all have to realize that any pet can get sick and before we purchase realize that it is going to cost us one day to make sure they are happy and healthy.

So when you look at terms is a vet expensive again at the time you may be short changed but in the future your pet will thank you for not having to suffer. I got a rabbit years ago for $5 at a flea market, I was in the ER with him within 3 days of e-coli infection. I spent 100.00 US dollars on him and I was only 17 I believe at the time. It was my own money and I was devastated but I didn't think twice. The bunny died and I shed tears as if I had him for 10 yrs the life expectancy of a rabbit.

So tell your husband that the money is missing for a good cause :D
