Posted May 4, 200718 yr Well, my mom had a thing for Parakeets for a while, so we ended up with four. However, my family is too busy to do more than feed and water them; they are less than trained. Since I'm off from school for the summer, I decided I'd like to tame them, there's no reason why not. I'm not sure if it's too late to tame them, we've had the little buggers for a year or two, at least. So, I took one out and began playing with it for a few days. I got her stepping on my finger (I've sorda done this before, but usually with younger ones), but she still squawks at me unpleasantly when I move or make any noise of my own. I don't know how to get her to stop squawking at me. She'll rest on my finger fine, unless I bug her too much (petting, "step," et cetera), then she'll try to fly (clipped wings make that hard) and runs when I try to catch her. Also, I'm not sure if I should tame them all at once or just one at a time. I realize it's not an overnight process, but the squawking is driving me nuts.
May 4, 200718 yr What type of relationship are you looking for in regards to taming? If you are looking for a budgie to follow you around, sit on your shoulder, talk to you at this point I would say because they 4 of them the chance of this type of tameness is rare if null. It is easier to work with sole budgie and then introduce new ones in to the flock to keep the tameness. At this point if you are looking for stepping up, accepting you into their flock and them enjoying their company. I would work with them together and alone. So example you can have group sessions and solo taming time. I would work with the one that is the most tame and not fearful of you. Budgie tend to follow the crowd. So if you work with the one that is most scared and he is flapping around and trying to get away from you the others will follow suit. Also I don't know if they are clipped but this may be something to consider it does help with taming big time. It gives them a true "attitude" adjustment where they become more dependent on you. Clipping is a personal choice and I believe each individual person makes a decision based on what they are looking for in their birds. Pretty and Merlin where both clipped and I let them grow out. When Pretty died I had Merlin reclipped for taming purposes. I hope this helps you can do a search on this forum too on top and read about taming plus I am working now on an FAQ taming section. Let us know if you have more questions and welcome.
May 5, 200718 yr i would also go one at a time since taming four at a time is very hard. Clipping might be something to consider but thats your personal choice.
August 11, 200717 yr If you tame them one at a time the others might get jealous and follow him and want to come out! :ygbudgie: P.s Remember keep the sessions short and frequent
