okay,

 

I have 2 new additions to my aviary. one was bought and the other was caught. Both were seperated for a month to ensure that they were well enough.

 

the first was the bought budgie, name Hugo. He is a pied, however i do not know if he counts as recessive or dominant. What is the difference? He is a wonderful bird and unlike many aviary birds, he is not that timid.

 

the second was caught by a student i tutor. they have peachfaces and this budgie flew into their yard looking for food. they caught it by hand, that is how tired it was, then they kept it isolated for 2 months, looking for an owner or a new owner. Finally they asked me to take it as they had no other budgies. I call her brewster. this is why. When you look at her chest, you can see blue and green, and a combination of the two. She is yellow face, so she has a bit of everything going on. She came from the streets (well not really, but that is where she was found) and has now ended up living a good life in an excellent aviary. rags to riches story. When i was growing up, there was a show on tv about a little girl like this. She always wore clothes with all different colours, and she was living a rags to riches story. her name was Punky Breswter, thus why I called my new little one Brewster. I am thinking that she is a type 2 yellow face blue, is that right?

Love the name Brewster (a perfect match :sad:) Yes she is a yellowface type 2.

 

Hugo is a recessive pied, and might be violet as well. There is a differance, recessive have colour patches around their rump area and a splattering of wing markings. Also they do not get an iris ring or the grown up blue cere for males.

 

Have a look at Kaz's Twin thread those two babies are dominant pied.

A little off topic, but can I ask how big the squares are in your aviary wire. In the pictures you have posted above they look like they are 1 inch square.

Hugo reminds me an awful lot like my Spirit, except that hugo's got more blue on his chest/tunny area. Spirit is a double factor dom pied.

If I was to take a jab at what type of pied, I would have said double factor dominant pied. Does he have iris rings in both or one of his eyes? My Spirit has one iris ring only.

Cheeta you may be right! Looking again at the wing markings that are all close together (more a dominant pied trait). I don't see any colour around the neck area but DF's don't alway have to have that. Dmcminn can you answer the iris question please.

no iris rings. At first I thought that it was because he was young, but it may actually be because of his mutation right?

That is a fairly large gauge wire and is generally better for larger birds, such as tiels, cockatoos and lager parrots.

 

A budgie could easily get their head stuck in wire that large and injure or kill themselves accidentally. I would probably try to change it, if it was mine.

How old is Hugo? if he's older, then I'd have to correct it and say that he's a recessive pied. but sometimes some budgies don't get their iris rings till a bit older, but Hugo does look like he should have iris rings by now. so he is probably a recessive pied.

if a boy a DF pied will also have a blue cere in most cases another

to me he looks recessive but Cheeta you know how I am with that (Laughing out loud)
