May 23, 200718 yr I don’t know if when you said Norm said to trim feathers around the bird’s vent, you meant me, as it was Macka suggested that. I have never trimmed any feathers & I think I have read on some expert sites in the UK that it’s not necessary. Daves birds aren’t the very heavy feathered type from what I can see, so he doesn’t need to worry. You have done the right thing Dave, being patient, as has been proven by your successful hatching. Some young pairs will have a few infertile eggs followed later in the batch by fertile ones. I don’t think it’s necessary also to remove the eggs even if they don’t hatch, I don’t bother candling my eggs at all, but off course you can do it. My thoughts are that it’s even better to leave them anyway, if they are infertile, as that’s normal. I find that Budgies are pretty self sufficient & after the time needed will even then eat their eggs & then lay another batch. I think that after laying the first batch it’s best for the hen to have this normal spell from laying. I of course remove any rotten eggs left after the babies have finished hatching.
May 25, 200718 yr Hi Norm, the suggestion to trim the feathers around the vent was if there were no fertile eggs in this batch, but, as we can now see, it was a very successful clutch after all I do trim the feathers around the vent of my exhibition budgies, and I have done so with my current pet types also as I have deliberately put a small budgie with a larger budgie. So in the case of my small cock with the large hen it was definitely needed. Dave, any red eyes amongst them? Feathers.
May 25, 200718 yr Author i have taken some photos and I will upload them when i get home. No red eyes visible, all look dark.
May 26, 200718 yr Author three little ones so far, but they are growing fast. Mum is very protective and i literally have to shoo her out of the nest box to get photos and to clean. very protective. here we go... more pics to come later
May 26, 200718 yr Author maybe, i will check the nest box again and try to have a good look. Sometimes it is hard to tell with pics. Look at Angel. by that picture, she looks more like a DFC than an albino
May 26, 200718 yr Yeah, I was wondering whether the little one had red eyes too. Hard to tell in that photo though, and yes, Dave sometimes it is hard to see, let alone photograph the red eyes in ino's, especially if they are a deep plum colour. All your babies are looking great. Feathers.
May 27, 200718 yr Author Some new pics of the little ones. 3 is all it is going to be in here I think, and that is good for her 1st clutch. Notice that the eldest is a lot darker than the next oldest, and all eyes look dark to me.
May 27, 200718 yr Notice that the eldest is a lot darker than the next oldest, and all eyes look dark to me. You can see if the eyes are red, so they are all obviously black. The biggest one is about to break out in pins everywhere Feathers.
June 2, 200718 yr Author Took some new pics. Sorry it took so long - the last 2 weeks have been ***, with so many teaching commitments, a tournament for a football team on (we won it by the way) and just general life. Anyway, as you can see, feathers are emerging on our little ones. It is not too early to guess at what we think we have here. I think that the eldest of the 3 is going to be a standard green, the next eldest will be a spangle like dad, and the 3rd will also be a spangle. Any other guesses?
June 2, 200718 yr I'm still a bit iffy with the eye colour, they don't look fully back in the pictures (bub 2 and 3) Bub 1 is feathering like a normal. The face the other two don't have the black spots (and darker fluff) makes we think again of Ino's.
June 5, 200718 yr Author Some new pics were taken today. I am not sure about the Ino theory. Are Lutino's possible? Or are the yellow feathers more likely to indicate that they are spangles like their Dad? How do I know if the legs are splayed or that little one is just sitting poorly? What do you all think on colours now?
June 6, 200718 yr I'm very interested to see how they feather up Dave, and to see what others say about babies feet.
June 6, 200718 yr Some new pics were taken today. I am not sure about the Ino theory. Are Lutino's possible? Or are the yellow feathers more likely to indicate that they are spangles like their Dad? How do I know if the legs are splayed or that little one is just sitting poorly? What do you all think on colours now? Dave, Is it certain that the Mum is an ALBINO ? Could she be a Double Factor Spangle ? Has she definitely got RED eyes ? By the way.......your babies have no splay leg problems. ***ALSO...the reddish eyes that some of us saw in the initial photos of the babies ( knowing they were not INOS ) is an indication of cinnamon chicks. The second one along looks to have cinnamon spangle markings to me. Edited June 6, 200718 yr by **KAZ**
June 6, 200718 yr Author I thought she had red eyes. In fact, i am almost sure, but i will check again. Thanks for helping alleviate my fears in regard to splayed legs. Can being an Ino mask cinnamon? I mean, is it possible for her to carry that gene? I am not sure how the whole genes things works, let alone INO genes. Just went and had another look. Angel definitely has red eyes, so that makes her an Albino. No doubt there at all. Look at these pics Here is one of her bubs taken today.
June 6, 200718 yr Interesting. Also the two chicks I can see the cere on ( not the yellow one ) ......are both hens.
June 6, 200718 yr you are good Kaz, you are good!!! I sometimes get it wrong. But those ones I am sure about. :hap:
June 6, 200718 yr Ino and cinnamon = lacewing so ino doesn't mask cinnamon Since the ino's are both hens it means that dad is split for the ino gene beautiful clutch
June 6, 200718 yr My guess is that the oldest one is a Normal Green, then a Spangle & third a Lutino. Your game Kaz guessing their sexes at that age…the cock [father] must be split for red eye too, so the Lutino can be either cock or hen. Edited June 6, 200718 yr by Norm
June 6, 200718 yr Author Wow, I hope you are right Norm. one or two Lutino's would be awesome. One normal, one spangle and one lutino would be wonderful. Who am I kidding? Happy healthy little ones is all i want.
June 10, 200718 yr Author Big cleaning day for all bird, aviary and breeding boxes. This also means photo day, so hoping everyone is very presentable. Here are the latest baby pics. All are feathering up nicely. One green normal, and just how cute is she? That picture with her head looking over the container, very very cute. And two lutinos? Or spangles? Not sure. they do appear to have a dark marking on their backs under the feathers coming through. Is that normal for lutinos? Eyes look black as well.
