What Are The Chances?

Featured Replies

What are the chances of teaching my budgies to talk when there are three in the cage. One is an older one who has not learnt to talk but is very attentive when I talk to him and the other two are young ones (around eight weeks).

Some people tell me that there is no chance at all but others say it could happen.

I am wondering what other peoples opinions on this would be.

It is very difficult with more than one. The reason for that is because when it is just you one on one with a bird, you become their flock, so they pay more attention to you. When they have other feathered friends, unless you have previously closely bonded with them all, you aren't a part of the flock.

Also, in order to learn to talk, you need a young male budgie.

It is possible if you separated one of the young ones, if you have a male, and kept him in a different room so that you can spend the time one on one to train him. But bear in mind that it is likely to take many months.

Honestly in my experience very slim, when Pretty started talking I got Merlin and he completely stopped. It is best if you can really bond with 1 first, get them to talk very well and then you have a better chance. I am sure there are expections.

Una had Apple but she took care of him at a very young age and he talked and taught the others to talk. But I believe Apple is expectional :grbud:.

I am not sure if Bea's Blink is still talking after Oz was introduced and the other buddies he has now :(. You will have to ask her.

"Pretty did learn how to talk listen closely"

My friends budgie, Budgiekins (I handraised him for her) has lived with her cockatiel since day one and has learned to say 'budgie'. So it is possible, but probably unlikley...

I think in terms of living with same species and different species make a big difference in talking ability. I'd think that if budgiekins is living with another budgie, his chances of speaking would drop dramatically.

Budgiekins thinks he is a cockatiel, he thinks Flash is his mate :( He feeds her! However I agree, with another budgie I think your chances of teaching one to talk would drop. Why would they want to learn to talk to you, when they can already talk to their friend? :grbud:
