Budgie Vomits Sometimes After Eating Seed

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a budgie he is about 3 months old, i got him from a breeder.

I took him to the vet after finding he was a bit sneezing and trying to vomit sometimes.

He was getting bayrtil from the vet for a week twice a day and the vet found out he got also megabacteria and gave him another medicine for 10 days.

The vet asked me to come after 2 weeks to check him out again i came and he said that he has cleared from the megabacteria however he found he got canker so he gave me antibiotic to give him in the water for 7 days and repeat after 2 weeks.

While he was having antibiotics he was fine however when i he finished the antibiotics he got his sort of sneezing/vomiting again after eating seed in the morning.

I realised he has some problem to digest seed he tries to vomit after eating seed but that is not happening every day only about 2-3 days a week then he does not want to fly out of his cage even if I let his cage be opened.

The budgie can be very healthy and happy one day and one day later he feels sick.

Any ideas?

Eyal

Canker can cause scarring in the throat, that would probably explain the vomiting - they can't swallow so it comes back up. I don't know why he only does it some days... is there anything different about the days he is worse? eg, Hotter, Colder, Different Food etc

I would keep taking him to the Vet, they are trained and I am just taking a guess... Is your vet an Avian Vet?

Hi ellulah,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes the vet is an avian vet i gave him medicine for canker (VetFarm medicine) in the water for 7 days and i repeated after 2 weeks the vet advised me to give it to him after he checked him out.

It happens when he eats seed. Also one time i found he tries to vomit after i had some smell of cooking in the living room a night before but i wouldn't know if the smell of cooking was causing it.

Its really frustrated because one day he feels very healthy very active and other he feels sick.

The vet also did a blood test for psittacosis he was cleared and he also checked his breathing and he was fine.

I would take him into the Vet again, you don't want to take any chances and the symptoms are still there. Good luck.

I agree take him to the avian vet for another check-up to ensure his health is okay.

When you said "the smell of cooking"...do you use teflon or non stick ccokware at all ?

Hi Kaz,

I use the oven but there is some smell of cooking sometimes in the living room for about 1/2 hour.

do you have a self cleaning oven, tephlen is most dangerous when it comes to it's burning point that is why it is advised for bird owners to 1. get rid of it all or 2. you must be extremely careful when cooking so your food doesn't not burn. The fumes can kill your budgie.

Have you decided to take him back to the avian vet?

Hi Elly,

I think i will have to. I saw him eating his dropping today he may have been re-infected himself with Canker again.

I don't know, it has been really frustrated he has seen the vet twice already since i got him about 1 1/2 month ago.

:D Yes, back to the vet, I know it is terribly frustrating but let us hope it all gets sorted out for both your sakes. :greenb:

It is frustrating I am sorry , please keep us updated on what happens.

Can I ask what type of a diet your little one is on? Diet is the KEY to a healthy immune system so maybe we can help you figure out how to improve his diet and try and keep him healthier after he is all better first.

Hi Elly,

thanks you very much for the responds i think that may helped.

I think i realised this morning what may have causing it. He was happily singing this morning and as soon as i finished to heat bread in the oven he was feeling sick again then i think its coming from a burned smelling in the oven i changed the aluminum in the oven and opened the living room doors for fresh air to come in. He is now happy singing again.

I cancelled the vet appointment and i will see in the next few days how he feels.

Diet - he didn't have grit till yesterday so i bought him some also i bought him pellets .

Until yesterday he was on seeds and brockley and sometimes apple.

In water i give him probiotic because he was on too much antibiotics recently also he has been moulting for the last 1 1/2 months.

Here is more information on diet I think you will see with a diet change you will find improvement. Vitamin A is very important for the respiratory system. Don't change the diet over all at once do it gradually and we have a lot of info in the FAQ's.

Food and NutritionWhat should my budgie eat?

It is very important to remember that a budgie on an all-seed diet is not getting the nutrition he/she needs in order to live a long, healthy life. Feeding your budgie a large variety of healthy foods can increase its life span and reduce the risks of common health issues such as lipomas (fatty tumors). No seed mix or pellet is a "complete diet" (despite what many will say on the package) so it's vital that you give your bird a good, varied diet.

Ideal Diet ? Your budgie's diet should consist of roughly 30% pellets, 30% seeds, and 30% fresh foods like healthy fruits and vegetables. Treats should be given sparingly and make up only about 10% of what your budgie eats. Make sure that the seed mix you buy doesn't contain many sunflower or safflower seeds as these are especially fattening. Pellets should not contain artificial colors/dyes. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before feeding them to your bird as pesticides are harmful to them. Buying organic is ideal.

Other Foods - Along with the foods mentioned above, there are cooked foods that you can also offer your budgie such as Beak Appetitand Crazy Corn. Organic wheatgrass is another very healthy food you can offer but should only be given about once a week.

Water: Your budgie's water should be changed every day (as often as needed each day) to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.

Cuttlefish Bone: Helps keep your budgie's beak in good condition and they also provide your budgie with calcium.

Never allow your budgie to have alcohol, avocados, apple seeds, or chocolate as these are toxic to budgies. Birds have trouble digesting dairy products so steer clear of these as well. Read: Unsafe Foods
