Posted April 30, 200718 yr Hi, I have a budgie who has only laid one egg 11 days ago and she has not had anymore. My question is will my baby budgie be okay being the only one in the nest. I am concerned it may get squished by the mother or the father as he spends quite a biot of time in the nest box with his girl. Is there anything that I should do? This is the first time that they have bred, that I know of too. Any help would be appreciated, Wendy

Any help would be appreciated, Wendy A single egg/ single chick often isnt ideal as the parents dont quite feel the urgency to feed or look after single chicks properly but there are exceptions. Most of my Dads are in the nest box with their hens and it doesnt present any problems of they are calm and good parents. Babies are made to stand up to being stood on by their parents and are resilient little things. The problem you may have already is...the egg may not be fertile, so you may want to candle it and see if it is or not and whether or not its worth worrying about right now. If the parents are young or newbies and are silly things that dash about in the nesting box, they may well have addled the egg by their shuffling about in there already. An addled egg wont hatch. It is strange she has laid just the one egg and she may well have done that out of inexperience and perhaps before any mating or fertilisation took place. So, first things first.... candle the egg (check our FAQs for how to ) and see if you have a viable chick in the egg. Then go into plan two and we can help some more.
