Couple Of Questions

Hi again,

I just remembered, I've been wanting to ask. Konrad, my 1,5 year old female has a few odd things with her.

For start, she has had this dark area over her cere/beak since we got her, you can see it here:

Also, she has somewhat of a "punk hairdo", as in, her feathers grows out a little right over the cere. You can see it in these two pics

I've just found it odd, since I haven't seen it on any other budgies.

Her tail-feathers has also been deformed since we got her (she was about 8 weeks old then) and they have never recovered. It doesn't seem to bother her though, but she lacks a beautiful tail like most budgies has.

And yea, she is missing the longer wing feathers (I forget the name for them in English, the ones on her hand) since she molded in august 2006, whenever she grows one out, she loses it again.

The vet said she should be okay, she should be a happy climber. Problem is, Konrad loves to fly, and she tries just about every day with a pretty bad crash as a result.

I just don't know what else to do to help her out.

She gets all the food needed, extra minerals, vitamins, fresh veggies and god knows what, and nothing helps her.

I would be fine with a climber, but I can see how badly she wants to fly again, and it breaks my heart every time she crashes. :hap:

You can see what I mean in a movie under this thread

Thanks guys

Nharvi

Hi Nharvi, Konrad is a sweetie, such a beautiful colour, as I have mentioned before. She is what is known as a 'runner budgie'. I have one myself. Mine holds onto his perch and flaps his little wings as hard as he can, just for the fun of it I think.

She will be fine without, don't fret. There are many pet budgies that go through life without flight or tail feathers.

As for the brown look above the cere and the 'fringe', this is quite normal as well. Many budgies, especially around the time that they are moulting, get a brown tinge above the cere. I assume that is when she gets the 'punk look' as well, as she doesn't always have a punk style in his photos.

She looks perfectly happy and healthy to me :hap:

Feathers.

p.s. you are gorgeous too :hap:

Hi again Feathers,

and thank you for your quick replies =)

Yea, she is quite the runner, and exactly like you say, she sits and holds on to her perch and flaps like mad while calling out to the world how strong she is... I see it as the warcry "Sparta!!!" in budgietalk :hap:

Hmm.. didn't know that moulding was connected to the colour of her fringe (or vice versa rather), interesting!

Thank you for once again taking your time to answer my questions, and I think I'll add in with another one if thats okay.

Considering Konrad haven't been able to fly since August 2006, and I accept she is a runner budgie, how do I go about getting her a male?

The vet told me to wait with that until she was able to fly again, since othervice she would be bullied and picked on most likely, and it wouldn't be very fair on Konrad, but if that isn't going to happen.. well...

She is quite the happy little thing, but I don't want her to live alone at all times, everyone should be able to have a friend I think.

Any ideas for me?

Oh, and I thought I edited out myself from all the pics, in the movies I let my hubby be the star, but thank you =P

Hi Nhavi, I was going to ask if you had been married, I saw the engagement photo on the site that you post your pics (sneaky I know :hap: ).

She will be fine with a mate, females are the bullies of the species, not the males, but even with another female she would be okay. There are several members here who have runner budgies as well as flighted budgies. My runner was in an aviary with many others when I got him, and he was fine in there. He is now with another budgie who has 'flight issues', a female, who is a bit of a bully, but they get along great.

Go ahead and get Konrad a mate, but make sure that you quarantine in another room for at least 30 days, in case the new budgie is carrying anything contageous. Also use that time to 'bond' with and finger train the new budgie as it is often hard once they are together.

Haha sneaky sneaky! (it's totally okay though =P)

Thank you, I shall begin the search for Sweden's Next Top Model Budgy Boy and I'll keep you guys updated in case we find a prospect.

A bit offtopic,

I've been looking at a Bourkes parakeet, the Rosey mutation, and they are adorable! They look just like a little neonpink budgy. I wonder if they would like eachother? /ponder

Hi Nharvi, I can't view that link, it may be in an area that only members of the site can access.

As a rule most species don't mix well with budgies, but others may be able to give you more information on that. Karen, a member here, has owned both species so she would be a good person to ask.

If it were me, I'd keep up the search for the Next Top Model Budgie Boy :hap:

Thx for the info, oh yea, I will still look for that special someone for Konrad, I thought the other one would be a nice addition to the family as well =P

I'll change the link so you can view it, not sure whats wrong with it.

Nharvi, that is a great picture of a bourke.. who wouldn't want one :hap:

Feathers.

Bourke's are a lovely quiet bird. You may find your budgie too aggressive for a bourke. On the other hand birds like to be awake when budgies and others are trying to sleep so that could also be a disturbance to your budgie. Our bourkes were twice the size of my budgies but I have seen smaller ones. They are a lovely bird but I would not mix them with budgies :hap:

Thank you Kaz, I appriciate the info.

I'll hold on the Bourkes then, I don't want any of the birds to get stressed, and Konrad is such a quiet little bird already, she goes to sleep at 7 pm in the evening, and sleeps til I get up in the mornings hehe.

I don't want that to change if I can help it =P

Only exception for her to stay up longer than 7 pm is if it's sport on TV, I don't know what it is with sports, but she LOVES it! She sits and comments the game the whole time, it's so cute =P

Thanks again for all the great feedback
