Posted April 23, 200718 yr I have been concerned about Sherbie's health for a little while, she has had runny poops for a long time and has been on one dose of baytril, which helped a little but I wasn't satisfied. Lately I noticed her very lethargic and fluffy and I am really worried about her health. She went to the vets on Friday, and he was concerned with her heart rate being slow. He thinks she may have either a thyroid disorder or liver disease :fear She was back at the vets today to get some blood tests done - she had to be anesthetized so they could take the blood, and because of her low blood pressure he couldn't take as much as he wanted. If it is a thyroid problem it can't be tested because they need more blood than they can get from a budgie. They can only take 0.3 of a ml - that is such a tiny amount of blood At the moment she is on her own in the lounge room with us. She is getting lots of extra special attention and is on another dose of baytril for 3 weeks to try and clear up her poop. When it was examined the vet couldn't find anything in there that would be causing it to be runny. The test results come back tomorrow, and if they find nothing wrong then he is going to put her on and iodine supplement to see if it is a thyroid disorder. If it is the iodine will help her, but she will have to stay isolated from the other budgies. I hope that my sweet little girl starts to perk up soon, or at least if there is something wrong we can get her on the right treatment to make her feel better
April 23, 200718 yr *hugz* Riebie, I'll add your little baby to the prayer list. I hope she will be okay and that they work out why she is sick real soon. Feathers.
April 23, 200718 yr :fear Sorry to hear that Sherbie is under the weather and that the lab results will show something for which she can be treated. Hugs.
April 25, 200718 yr Author Thanks everyone Well the test results are back - I am pleased to say there is no trace of liver or kidney disease or diabetes :hap: The vet is convinced it is a thyroid disorder, and has given me an iodine supplement to put in her water for the next 3 weeks. On top of that she is still on a dose of baytril for 3 weeks as well, to try and clear up her runs. She still isn't looking better yet though
April 25, 200718 yr Take comfort in that most of tests were within normal limits and the medication prescribed will most likely bring her back to good health.
April 30, 200718 yr Thanks everyone Well the test results are back - I am pleased to say there is no trace of liver or kidney disease or diabetes The vet is convinced it is a thyroid disorder, and has given me an iodine supplement to put in her water for the next 3 weeks. On top of that she is still on a dose of baytril for 3 weeks as well, to try and clear up her runs. She still isn't looking better yet though Hi Riebie. I have some sort of same problem with my budgie he is about 3 months old, i got him from a breeder. I took him to the vet after finding he was a bit sneezing or trying to vomit. He was getting bayrtil from the vet for a week twice a day and the vet found out he got also megabacteria and gave him another medicine for 10 days. The vet asked me to come after 2 weeks to check him out again i came and he said that he has cleared from the megabacteria however he found he got canker so he gave me antibiotic to give him in the water for 7 days and repeat after 2 weeks. While he was having antibiotics he was fine however when i he finished the antibiotics he got his sort of sneezing/vomit again. I realised he has some problem to digest seed he tries to vomit after eating seed but that is not happening every day only about 2-3 days a week then he does not want to fly out of his cage even if i let his cage open. I think the vet does not know what he has . The budgie can be very healthy and happy one day and one day later he feels sick. Eyal
