Posted April 22, 200718 yr I have recently had to remove all my leg bands on my budgies as they were all to tight. And was wondering if i should put anything on the leg where the ring was? I cleaned the sites and was wondering if Aleo Vera plant was okay for their scrapes and scratches? And is it True that Paraffin oil helps with egg binding? What causes egg binding? Is egg binding caused by their diet? Thanks for you help ram2006
April 22, 200718 yr Hi Ram, I am not too sure about the Aleo I guess it is natural so it shouldn't hurt them, However more experience members will read and post you soon I am sure.... With Egg binding I am aware that it is lack of Calcium in their diet which is what makes their eggs shells hard or it mayalso be age as well if you use the search button I can remember reading past post on the egg binding... Good Luck with it all.....
April 22, 200718 yr Neat is correct on all counts here. Aloe Vera is good for budgies. Eggbinding is due to 1. budgie too young to breed 2. lack of calcium 3. budgie too old to breed We have some great writeups in our Frequently Asked Question section http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/ enjoy your research. PS I would not use parrafin oil on a budgie. Edited April 22, 200718 yr by Kaz
April 22, 200718 yr Thank you very much i wont be giving my birds paraffin oil but was told it would help by the pet stores here as that is what the all use when they get in egg bound birds. Yep that happens here in our little town to many dodgy people with birds they should all be serously told off. As for Aloe Vera plant i will give it a go where a few have little rub marks on their leggs from the tight bands and will let you know how it went. Thanks again Ram P.s all my birds are find for now and i have 2 little babies about 2 weeks old they are Beautiful.
April 22, 200718 yr Hiya Ram, I was just wondering why "all' of your birds had tight leg rings. Are these birds that you rung yourself? Maybe you used bands that were meant for a smaller bird, like a finch. The only other time bands need to be removed usually, is when the bird has a foot or leg infection and it is swollen. Feathers.
April 22, 200718 yr Oh my goodness isn't this funny Daz just send me information on this for the FAQ section called Natural Conditioning here it is Aloe Vera I am not sure if there is any scientific evidence to back up this article but people who have used it seem pleased with their results, and there is Aloe Vera available in New Zealand for farmers to give to their dairy cattle. Most health shops sell capsules, hand cream etc., so there must be something going for it. I have had two people contact me on the use of AloeVvera as a natural wormer and also a tonic and pick me up. The first person places a whole AloeVera leaf in his drinking water for four to five days every two months and says there is no algae forming while it is in the water. The other is from Les Gill and he uses Aloe Vera on his birds. Keep your birds in top condition by growing and using Aloe Vera in your aviary's day to day management. Aloe Vera is a miracle cure for most diseases in birds. It helps with digestive disorders caused by birds eating infected foods. It is a wormer and laxative. It is excellent on cuts and sores and will stop cuts bleeding and act as an antiseptic. It can be used as a spray and acts as a conditioner. It stops bacterial and fungal growth. It gives your birds greater stamina. It helps prevent egg binding. It will help control a lot of other diseases. The active ingredients in AloeVera are: Alion, Baralon, Natalon, Chlorophyl, Emodin, Resins, Albumin, Essential oils, Gum Arabic, Silica, Phosphate, Lime, Iron. The minerals it contains are Vit. A, Vit B1, Vit B2, Vit B3, Vit C, Vit E, Vit B12, The minerals it contains are Calcium, Chloride, Chromium, Copper, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, and zinc There are also 17 amino acids and 5 enzymes. The enzymes are most beneficial to the birds whole system and will activate the functioning of any sluggish parts. This means an improvement in health and well-being, and a noticeable difference can be observed after 48 hours. To use Aloe Vera make a gel juice by the following method. Fill a one litre jar with rain or filtered water, and place a 115 gram piece of Aloe Vera leaf in it. If using as a wormer of laxative leave the thick skin on, otherwise trim it off. (Remember, put water in jar first) Place jar in refrigerator for 24 hours. The leaf will float at first and when ready will sink to the bottom of the jar. Dilute the solution 50/50 with water and give to your birds daily. The original solution can also be topped up and the Aloe Vera leaf will be effective for 14 days.. Remember you cannot overdose your birds on this. Important points Do not shake or stir the jar as the enzymes are very sensitive. Keep refrigerated, enzymes are destroyed by heat. Change water daily. Solution can also be sprayed on birds for external parasites. For cuts and sores use the gel that oozes from the leaves. Natural Conditioning Last update: 2007-04-21 14:59 Author: Contributed by Daz
April 22, 200718 yr Makes sense to me. There is nothing better on most wounds than getting hold of a cut aloe vera leaf to rub on it. It works as a disinfectant and promotes healing. If it is good enough for us, it must be good for the birds too. You have to love mother nature, she has a solution for everything. Feathers.
April 23, 200718 yr YEAH !!! I have learnt of theis forum : ) .... I am sure that Olive oil around the vent can also help with egg bond hens... Please correct me if I am wrong.....( Hopefully I am not ; p )
April 23, 200718 yr YEAH !!! I have learnt of theis forum : ) .... I am sure that Olive oil around the vent can also help with egg bond hens... Please correct me if I am wrong.....( Hopefully I am not ; p ) Olive oil...yes and no. Better is a warm cage and liquid calcium straight into the beak. Warmth helps more than anything. The olive oil smeared around the entrance to the vent may help a very young hen trying to pass a large-ish egg. But I have found a warm hospital cage and calcium will work most every time. In saying that, those inexperienced with eggbound hens ( I have veterinary nurse background ) ...I would suggest a very quick trip to a vet, as you can lose the hen very fast depending on how long she has been trying to "deliver" the egg. Edited April 23, 200718 yr by Kaz
April 23, 200718 yr The usual treatment for being eggbound is some olive oil or vegetable oil or some other non toxic oil being put on the egg and on the edges of the vent area that are pressing against the egg holding it there. The oil works it's way in, loosens the vent area and the egg can be expelled.
April 23, 200718 yr Often, with an eggbound hen the egg isnt yet visible. A hen can also be eggbound due to a softshelled egg which is harder to deliver. In both those cases the olive oil doesnt help much.
April 23, 200718 yr Actually when your hen is egg bound you should seek immediate medical attention according too all the articles I have read. I posted that because you mentioned the oil.
April 23, 200718 yr Actually when your hen is egg bound you should seek immediate medical attention according too all the articles I have read. I posted that because you mentioned the oil. Agreed......the best course of action for an eggbound hen is URGENT vet treatment. Edited April 23, 200718 yr by Kaz
April 23, 200718 yr Yes, eggbound hens need IMMEDIATE attention but as for myself, I must go get an aloe vera plant again, haven't had one since I moved, they are good for the birds and me, wonderful plant.
