Posted April 22, 200718 yr I am writing in hope that someone may be able to help shed some light onto my budgies condition??I have a 7month old budgie(named Mojo) which i have had for roughly 4months,since i got him,i noticed he would scratch at(well,in front of)his vent area occasionally, about 3weeks ago i noticed a lump above his vent area,i took Mojo to the vet who did an x-ray only to find that he has a VERY enlarged liver and the lump is his liver protruding, his air sacs look like deflated balloons due to the pressure from his liver, the vet is not sure what would cause such a thing in such a young budgie..now,through all this my little trooper has not shown any sickness and chatters, dances and talks like nothing else, although,he is starting to be picky with his food(wants to eat hulled oats alot!!??)...The vet is treating him for bacterial infection,i have to take him for his medication once a week for 7weeks.I am stressing out so bad,i'm hoping to here from anyone who maybe has seen this before or that can offer any extra advice
April 22, 200718 yr I hear you, have a rescue tiel that has been in the best of health but suddenly deterirorated!
April 22, 200718 yr Did he give you information on treating it through diet? Our budgies have been bred and bred and tumors, liver disorders and such have been a common ailment. Budgies DO mask their symptoms so even if your little one doesn't feel good it will act okay because in the wild it is be sick or get eaten or act well and be safe. I would suggest purchasing an electronic gram scale that goes up and down in increments of 1 gram so you can keep an eye on her weight that is one of the first indicators something is going bad. Keep an eye on the poos, measure how much she eats and make sure it is a variety of food. Pellets have been suggested to be the diet when they do have an liver enlargement does she eat those? If not you may work on converting her over SLOWLY. We have an article in the FAQs about diets you may want to read up on. At this point you are treating them symptoms which is inflammation of the liver to keep her healthy.
April 30, 200718 yr Hi My budgie has had an enlarged liver since he was young, he's now 5 yrs old. I think if you can get him onto pellets or at least half seed half pellets it might help a little. One of the vets told me that you can help by reducing weight in a budgie so as not to strain the liver but it's not worked for mine. You will probably notice he has green ish poo's as well (mine has all the time) but as for other help I have never found it. He is chirpy and lively most of the time, scratching a lot too and moults a lot, but with tlc he keeps on going thank goodness. Another thing you will notice too is his beak and claws will grow quicker than most budgies due to the liver condition. It's an ongoing thing that you just have to manage and keep in touch with your avian vet. I hope you can cope as it can be distressing at times. If you have any tips you find out please let me know, we might be able to help one another here. best of luck Chrissie
