Posted December 11, 200420 yr Hi all, What materials are safe to build a cage from? Should the initial structure always be made from a thick wire like conventional cages? How about plastics or woods? Thanks, Chris
December 11, 200420 yr all my breeding cages are made from plywood and painted white with a gloss paint (ensure it is lead free) with a wire front
December 12, 200420 yr Hi Hath, Thanks for your reply. Can we have a picture of the cages you built? Thanks, Chris.
February 9, 200520 yr I built a 4ft wide x 3ft tall x 2ft deep cage out of ?" welded galvanised wire mesh (fine rabbit hutch wire for want of a better cross Atlantic Description). I folded the wire and secured edges with plastic cable grips. Originally they were going to be temporary but the birds didn't peck them as expected so I didn't stitch it together with wire. A whole one third of a side folds out and down to let me in to clean and gives them a platform. Edges were finished with plastic report binders and spring clip catches were fashioned out of wire coat hangers. Wire mesh bottom with plywood catch tray below. Total cost $50 plus an afternoon of effort.
February 10, 200520 yr Chris - I don't have one handy butif you click on my name you will see a corner of the cage in my profile photo. The little white blips are the nylon cable grips. I was initially worried that the weight of the cat would cause problems but it just gently gives under her and springs back when she leaves. I love the whole cage being so light and airy. It is not see through but it is much more so than many others.
February 10, 200520 yr wow i REALLY like that cage! hmmmm makes me jealous - can make it any size one pleases!!!
