Hi Everyone,

I'm Summah I have just brought my first budgie for my family. I had one when I was a child I received him for my 1st birthday and he passed away when I was 13. He was a wonderful bird. :D And now I want my 5 children to feel how wonderful it is to own a bird.

Today we purchased a budgie from our local pet shop I was waiting for another store to get in a hand raised budgie. But as soon as I seen this little budgie today I knew I wanted him. The lady at the store told me he was 9 to 10 weeks old. When I got him home I put him in a cage in our main living area. I was surprised he didn't try and bite me and he also was just happy to sit on the perch while I filled his seed and water and placed some veggies around the cage. He didn't flap around the cage at all. I plan to leave him for 2 days so he can settle in. We have been talking to him and he seems happy to talk to us. Well not talk but whistle :D We are thinking about naming him Ollie. But I will sleep on it :)

I joined this site as it has been along time sense I have cared for a bird and I'm after all the advice I can get. The lady at the store told me not to feed Trill to the bird as it was bad for birds. This is what my father feeds his birds. And I already brought some trill and I also have some seed from pet shop. Is it okay to mix the 2 seed mixes together? And should I feed the bird Trill?

So I know I should give the bird water, seed, veggies and Fruit. But what other things should I put in the cage to make sure he is getting all the vitamins and minerals he needs?

Do I need to put vitamin drops in the water?

How often should he be wormed?

There will be many more questions but I will leave them for other posts. :D

Welcome to our forum. :D I hope you have fun here. Great people and great place to learn. We love seeing pictures of everyone's budgies. If you click on the posting pictures links in my signature you will work out how to post photos.

Can't say if Trill is good or bad. There has been the odd statement about that but I dont know the details and wouldnt tell anyone to do or not do a brand of birdseed without concrete proof. So, go with the seed you have until you find out different :D

Birds like greens like pakchoy, bok choy, silverbeet, broccoli. Also sweetcorn, on the cob or defrosted from frozen, grated carrot, apple and all kinds of things. Mine, personally go crazy over sweetcorn, grated carrot and chinese greens. Homemade eggfood is good too.

Would be safe to assume he may need worming but let him settle in first. Worming solution in his drinking water over a 3-5 day period, when you are ready. A bird in an avairy, especially a soil floor aviary needs worming more regularly than a caged bird.

He probably wont need any supplemental vitamins if he eats all his fruit and vegies on a regular basis. Give him a cuttlebone, and he won't need grit.

No question is too hard or too silly here. We are all here to help. Enjoy :D

Hi Socks, welcome to the BBC forum. There is so much fantastic information available here. If you go up the top and click on "Budgie FAQ" you will find a lot of the basic information there. Good foods, the grit debate, safe and unsafe items around the house etc.

We are always happy to answer any questions you may have as well.

As far as the Trill question goes, I was feeding my birds Trill and I know other members here do too, and I found no problems with it. All my birds were quite happy and healthy. As I have a lot more birds now I get my seed in larger quantities, otherwise I would quite possibly still use it.

Feathers.

Well not talk but whistle :D We are thinking about naming him Ollie. But I will sleep on it :D

WELCOME Sock.... This forum is great full of alot of advice...

About the Trill... I mix in a pkt with the seeds I get ( I make my own miexs up now) I like the fact that it has the vegies in it too, I am not to sure what others think but my birds are still alive ( 2 ys) I would worm him just to be sure. it is usually every 3 -4 months ( so my bottles says) But I re do all new birds again....

But in Branches not standard dow stick this helps their feet from setting sores and etc, Maybe a cuttlebone or mineral block ( Mine are in the shape of grapes).....

I'm sure you get more info and advice when the other member read your post....

I wish you "Ollie" and your family happy times ahead....

Hello and welcome. :D

Thank You for the warm Welcomes and advice :D

I will go to the store today and buy cuttlebone or mineral block.

He still hasn't touched the veggies and I'm not sure he ate any seed yet either. But I'm hoping cause we are going out for a few hours he will have a good look around the cage.

I have a eucalyptus gum tree in the front yard that Koala's often visit. So I will go and collect some branches and leaves and put them in the cage this afternoon. :)

I have been reading heaps of information around the board and in the FAQ. All the information is so helpful

:D Hello Socks and Ollie! Welcome to the forum and enjoy all the MANY topics, I have learned a lot and I know you will too! :) Like Kaz says, pictures (properly sized) are greatly appreciated so we can more visualize your feathered pets. (or unfeathered pets or others in off topic)

Yes I will have to post some pics of Ollie for you all to see. I am helping my mum renovate her home at the moment so my time online is limited. But I will do :hap:
