Greywing Or Dilute ?

Featured Replies

I have this pretty show type hen and need to know exactly if she is a greywing or a dilute. Can anyone help advise please ?

also, if you were breeding with her, what would you advise putting her to, to get a similar type of bird ?

Diluted is 80% of the body color is washed out

Greywing is 50% of the body color is washed out

Whitewing - Clearwing - which she is not because you can see the grey markings on her wings.

Saying that I am horrible about telling the difference between the 2 she looks more like 50% washed out but I could be totally wrong.

Dilute is recessive so if course if you wanted more dilutes you would need a cock split to dilute or a dilute.

Greywing is co-dominant with clearwing so homozygous greywing and a homozygous clearwing would give you a full body greywing.

I am not a show person so I don't know what you would need to strengthen the qualities but that is the genetics side of it.

Thanks Elly. I have her to enter in a show tomorrow night as a rare variety but I am unsure of which of the two categories to enter her in. Whats your best guess ?

I would say either Dilute or Greywing (not full body of course)

That would be my guess. She doesn't look like a very big bird she looks like a poof on her head. She is a very pretty girl. I remember Rainbow did a write up about the difference between dilute/greywing but honestly (Laughing out loud) it still confused me.

If true 50% is greywing wash outed and 80% is dilute what do you think?

Not terribly sure. She is darker than Smoky (aka Lucifer) was and he was dilute grey so maybe this girl is greywing

and "her" april286.jpg

I am thinking she may be a greywing ?

I would say greywing. I think the best boy for her would be another greywing or a clearwing, blue or split blue.

She is gorgeous.

She is a pretty girl....didnt have a name till a short while ago. As she is supposed to be "showing" she pivots around and around the perch...up and over, up and over....so I have called her Ferris after the Ferris wheel ride

I hope she behaves when she is "shown"

good luck for tomorrow night- she is real pretty. I really dont know an answer to this one, maybe going with dilute but next to Lucifer she looks more greywing. Anyone you could email and ask before the big night?

Grey Wing.

The spots should be grey.

Body colur approaching full intensity.

Marking should be mild grey

Eyes black with irus ring

Cheek patches Violet

Tail grey

Tail Quill V/blue

Also Kaz we don't have dilutes in Australian Shows. Only Grey wings and clearwings.

Thanks for all of that Daz. I appreciate it. Do they have a dilute category in a Rares show ?

No not in Queensland.

Here is the colour Standard for SQBBA

SQBBA Colour Standard.

It should be standard for WA. Just Check.

I have very little understanding when it comes to genetics and showing birds but just wanted to add, she is simply gorgeous!

Hey Kaz... Iam going with Grey wing too I am only learning with the dilutes, clear / grey wing but I have a dilut ( Margoo) she is really pretty poofy but pretty

http://www.budgieplace.com/colors.html click the Click Here to see photos of mutation combinations

there is a greywing in there if you want to compare ( nothing like your how ever grey)

....If i was in Perth you could use ElvisthELVIS.jpg..

Best of luck in the show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tend to agree with you, especially since I have looked back at grey dilutes I have had. I hope Ferris does okay ...she was a birdshop cull and cost me all of $20.

Elvis is a bit cute

Hiya Kaz,

I'd say greywing. As Elly said it is a recessive gene, so mating her to another greywing would give you 100% greywing offspring. If you mated her with a normal split greywing, you'd have a 50% chance.

The other way to go would be to mate her with a good quality normal and line breed with the best granchild.

feathers.

gray wings/ clearwings and dilutes are my weakest gene :D But I think gray wing is right

Edited by Nerwen

Well Greywings and clearwings are the 2 / 3 types of dilutes anyway :D

Good luck Kaz let us know how she does :D and if she behaves for the judge :D

She spent the afternoon show cage training. The only thing that will stop her is losing tailfeathers. :D

Having been through this greywing discussion, I found while looking through my birds, that I actually have a green greywing budgie also....a young hen ( show type )

She looks like this v_greywingfbc5.jpgborrowed photo but not her

I will get actual photos of her later. Pity she wasnt a cockbird or I could use her with Ferris :hap:

A friend sent the photo of Ferris to Gerald Binks and he says its a greywing :hap:

Ferris entertained by doing her "revolving budgie" routine at the show, but must have behaved for the judges long enough to win 1st in the novice section ( dilute ) and 1st in colour class overall ( dilute ). The judge said she was a close call between dilute and greywing. And said that one judge could class her as a dilute and another judge could class her as a greywing.....she seems to cross a line somewhere. I will take a picture of her with her rosette tomorrow. :P

Other budgies entered were...

A fallow cock 1st place in Novice

A texas clearbody hen 1st place in Novice

A white lacewing hen 1st place in Novice

I also won the raffle which was a new showcage :P

Edited by Kaz

Ferris was so funny, she does the absolute best budgie front hip circles I have ever seen. As a gymnastics judge I would have given her a 9.55 :P You did brilliantly, Kaz, and it WAS great to see someone who needed a show cage winning the raffle.. way to go.

Feathers.

Congratulations Kaz.. Strange we don't have a dilute class in the show colour class.

Looks like Gerald and I are a bit off the mark :P

We dont normally have a dilute class either Daz. But this was a BRASEA show for rare varieties so a dilute class was okay for this show. Robd and Cec were the judges and they said she could be classed as either greywing or dilute depending on who was judging....so everyone was right really and noone got it wrong :P
