i've been hunting thru posts tryin to find out what is best, but i want to ask to be sure

Mandy's birds eggs have started hatching, today we found one pink alive wriggling little bub (so cute and small), one dead very small baby and one egg thrown out (dead baby inside) ... 2 eggs left to hatch

i use hysorb woodshavings for my guinea pigs, and took some over to her place, is this appropriate for the bedding? the nestboxes are wooden with the concave bottoms

hopefully i can get a photo tomorrow

thanks

Congrads on your little jellybabies.... Mine haven't started breeding as yet but I have told/ read that woodshavings are fine I am not sure what hysorb ones are But I am sure one of the breeders here will reply to you quickly....

Is mum feeding bubs okay???

not sure what the hysorb bit means either, but I use woodshavings from a pet shop for bedding in mice and rabbit ages as well for birds, so it sounds like the same sort of stuff, the shavings are added to help with footing and to soak up the poops so they don't stick as much to their little feet. Just put in in an open container to air out for a day (in the sun is good)

Considering you have only had one successful baby out of three so far, might pay to keep an close watch on the mother and be terribly sure she is feeding the one you found alive. Best of luck :)

when i looked yesterday there seemed to be food in bubs crop (assuming i'm looking at the right place, i guess about 1/2cm down from the beak? like a little pouch? i will check again today. i didnt think the dead budgie was lack of feeding, there were 5 eggs saturday, then 3 yesterday, the dead baby much smaller than the live one. ii thought they hatched on alternate days?

Sometimes with a first hatching you can them closer together becuase the hen started brooding when there was a few eggs. Yes just under the beak you should see a yellow blob.

yep well i saw a yellow blob, so thats a good sign

i'll get a photo this arvo, i'm guessing its better to disturb them as little as possible (once morning and once arvo?)

thanks all for your help

thanks kaz, i sourced that one out this morning ;) i just wanted to be totally sure that i was on the right track

i figure its better to be super safe than sorry!! and i've saved that link to my favourites so i don't have trouble finding it
