Aviary Moving..

Okay so after my HUGE outbreak of Coccidiosis i'm planning on an aviary revamp and also its being relocated (once the garden extensions have been completed).. I was really hoping to be cementing the ENTIRE floor as well as enclosing all of the exposed mesh areas on the roof.. Only i hadn't realized the huge tree roots on the site that i want to relocate the aviarys too.. Seems i will be able to cement the main shed feeding areas but the flight section will be to hard to do.. I was thinking of using something like Ironstone chips in a bed of about 8 inches inside the areas that i cant cement, thinking that it would stop the birds from direct contact to the soil, they also have good drainage.. but i'm still not sure..

Sand would attract to much moisture i'm sure although it is really easy to sweep clean..

I would really love some input into this as i'm at a bit of a loss on which way to go..

Cheers

Your ironstone chips that deep should work, if you cant use concrete. Better than sand anyway. A few show breeders consistantly use garden lime brushed across the floors too, to keep spread of disease down. I am about to redo my aviaries soon as well. I am having all concrete floors. Not as "pretty" but better for keeping diseases at bay. Its moisture on the floors and soil they reinfest birds with diseases and worms. A BIG NO_NO in the bird world. Sounds like you have a good plan. How did the medicine go with the birds and how many birds ended up sick ? Do you think you have it under control now ? :P

:P Yeah Karen its all clear (for now).. been a week or so now since the last illness so i'm feeling confidant but still keeping an extra close eye on them all.. I lost close to 20 birds which is really sad, but its just one of those things that i have learnt a lot from and know more about for next time..

I will feel more at ease when i move the aviaries and do the flooring but for now i'm feeling fairly good about the whole situation

Cheers
