hello,1st time to this site. I've got 4 budgies fred and charlie (female) 1 of them bluey (female) got a month ago still a baby assume 3months old(beak goin a creamy brown color)? and barry who i got 2day assume 3 or 4 months old, beak is a definite blue, they live in an aviary. I put bluey in the avairy the same day i got her and she was very cheerful to be in open space but was chasing fred around swooping at him and he didn't want a bar of it as he is committed to his wife charlie. bluey has been quite domineering taking over all the favorites spots (perches, hanging seeder etc.) now seems to be quite aggressive, when the others try to hang out in there favorite spots, she attacks them and does the dolphin noise a lot and basicaly annoys them, they are taking it very well. 2day i put barry in the avairy and now she is aggressive with him i thought it would help bluey be more content having her own boyfriend. Is she not taking to him cos shes not mature yet????????

hello,1st time to this site - Welcome to our forums :)

I put bluey in the avairy the same day ** congrats on your new addition, I see you didn't quarantine and I am not sure if you were aware that you should. Everytime you purchase a new bird it should be quaratined for at least 30 days in a separate room away from your existing budgies. Budgies can carry illness and mask them well we can't always see if our budgies are sick or not. This is why avian vets suggest at least a quarantine fo 30 days and a maximum of 90 days. So I would suggest you start quarantine today with your new bird. This will ensure your new bird is not sick and your existing birds don't get sick. I have read about a whole flock has been wiped out for simply not doing correct quarantine.

As with the aggression of your new bird's behavior this is all new for her and she is trying to feel out everything. Remember everything is new for her and she really hasn't been given any adjustment time. During her quarantine time alone you can watch her, she can adjust and then you can reintroduce her. If she continues her aggression you can leave her quarantine cage in the aviary and let her go in and out as she pleases this will give her something of her own.

I hope this helps and others will come on with more suggestions. Check out our FAQ's for any questions you may have too :D or always feel free to ask here if you don't find the answer.

Hi Tecniqe, and welcome to the BBC forum.

Basically you have a very dominant, bossy female there. You say that you assume that Bluey was about 3 months old when you got her. Did she have bars on her head going down to her cere (the section above the beak which is turning a creamy brown colour) when you got her? (It would help if you could post a photo).

Bluey may have come from a large nursery or aviary where there was a lot of competition for perch space, food etc, and she has bought this bad behaviour with her.

I am a little concerned that you are putting birds that you just bought straight into your aviary. If they have a hidden disease or illness when you buy them they could infect your entire aviary.

As far as Barry is concerned you should probably take him out and put him into a separate cage for at least 30 days to quarantine him and make sure that he is well before re-introducing him to the aviary. Again, you think he is 3 or 4 months old, so he should have bars going to his cere too (this is assuming he is a 'normal' type of budgerigar). If you could post a photo we could have a look for you. We love to see photos of budgies here anyway :)

Putting in a new male won't necessarily settle Bluey down. She may just see him as further competition. Watch out for her in case she becomes too aggresive and starts to attack the other budgies, as the last thing you want is blood shed.

Check to make sure there is plenty of perch space for your budgies and enough food and water containers for them all to feed at the same time. A photo of your setup could also help us determine if there is a reason that Bluey is behaving as she is.

French moult Chicks lose feathers in or after leaving nest. In severe cases they fail to grow any feathers, except for some down feathers.

The virus hides in the cells of the immune system. Prevention is the best treatment. Clean bird room, breeding cages nest boxes with a solution containing sodium hypochlorite (Demestos or similar product). Using this cleaner will reduce the incidence of french moult by 95%. Research carried out by Sydney University has developed a vaccine for prevention of french moult. however due to lack of funds it has not been finalised. ($50,000 required to finish the work for commercial release.

That is fantastic. I use ivermectim on all of my new birds too, as it kills off any mites, as you said. worming them is great too. Thank you for passing on that information.

However these treatments won't help if they have an illness or contageous disease. Budgies often hide their illnesses, as in the wild this makes them vulnerable to predators. Without quarantine you could lose all your birds, which I'm sure you don't want.

Welcome to our forum :P I am sure you will enjoy it here. We look forward to seeing pictures of your birds.

You have been given some good advice. Quarantine isnt about worms and lice, its about diseases. Birds can carry disease that they have learned to live with. Its when one budgie meets another budgie that these illnesses can come out, especially under stress conditions. Quarantine helps so that you can observe and treat for anything that surfaces in that time. Worming and lice treament is part of budgie maintenace and is something you will do repeatedly at various times of the year.

It sounds like the budgies you got may be around the 5 months old mark more than 3-4 months. But we can tell you from a picture :fear

Look forward to hearing more from you. Welcome....Kaz
