Posted April 8, 200718 yr When a male budgie has a dark blue cere and female has dark brown crusty cere it is in breeding condition? What if they mated and layed eggs when they are not in breeding condition Does it mean if the males isn't in breeding conditon the eggs will be infertile and if female isn't i will lay less eggs. My female has layed 2 eggs and her cere is crusty andark brown and now it is outlining with light blue and my male is dark blue . What does this mean less eggs or will they in fertile
April 8, 200718 yr 1. A hen that is ready to breed should be over a year old and under 4 years. She should be in good physical condition (not under or over weight) and should have a dark chocolate brown cere. A cock in breeding condition will be in good physical condition, over 1 year old and have a deep blue cere (with the exception of those mutations in which males have a pink cere-albinos, lutinos, and recessive pieds). If either gender bird is moulting it would be wise to remove the nest box as moulting and raising chicks would take too much out of a budgie. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...d=27&artlang=en 2. The eggs may or not be fertile 3. if they are not in breeding condition they probably will not mate so the male will not mount the female could lay infertile eggs or none at all. 4. It is okay your female is coming out of breeding condition but was in breeding condition when she mated so the eggs being fertile is very possible. If I answered anything wrong or if more clarification is needed I know another member will come on
April 8, 200718 yr A bright blue cere in the cocks is one side of breeding condition. Acvtivity levels also increases. Dark chocolate brown ceres in hens mean that they are coming out of condition. They can still lay fertile eggs. The fertility of the eggs is really up to the cock. He has to successfully mate with the hen. After the third egg you can shine a strong torch through the eggs (candle them) to see if they are fertile. Edited April 8, 200718 yr by Kaz
