Stress?

Featured Replies

okay, the other day I recently had to move little Scuttle out of my room which has been his home for about 3 quarters of a year. Ever since I did that he hasn't been happy. Now I figure that's just because he's been moved into a new room.

But whenever I get him out of the cage just for some air and a bit of a flap, he breathes heavy. I'm not taking him anywhere he hasn't been before and I'm not doing anything different. So I was just wondering if it is stress from the move. (mind you it was a small move). Could it be the room?

I was nick-naming him R2D2 because of the little squeaking noises he makes whenever he sits on my shoulder, but since the move he hasn't been doing that either.

I'm a little worried and was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions.

Are his poops normal and is he eating normally? I would think that it's the stress from the move too, and hopefully he'll get used to it. Although, as you've said that he's been in this area before it doesn't really make sense...

There's nothing different in the environment is there? More dust? Nearer to somewhere cleaning products are used? Anything else like that....?

His poops are normal, unfortuneately I haven't been home much to notice if his eating habits have changed.

His cage is across from the computer (not where I wanted to put him but we kinda got no where else at the moment), but he's never had a problem with the computer, he was running across the keyboard before (Laughing out loud).

It could be the stress, when he was at my place he panted bit when I came close at first. Is he doing this while in the cage? Keep in mind he did have respiratory problems when young. silence (quietness) and extra sneezing where the signs when he was ill, also not playing with his bell. Tell everyone to watch him for things like that.

The move although only a small distance is a bigger change to him from your room.

Oh ya, I remembered just the other day that he had been sick just before I got him off you. I think he may have been panting one time in his cage, but that was the day he got moved. I have actually been concerned about his getting sick again and have been trying to pay attention to how much he sneezes.

He has been a little quiet, but I don't think its unusual as mum said during the day he's been playing, but ya I'm gonna have to watch him a little more closely I think.

well the long weekend should give you some time to watch and listen

just keep a good eye and have a number to call budgies can go down fast. If you could weigh him or check his keel bone to see if it is really protruding that would help you out too on his weight. The keel bone is the breast bone and when you feel it it should not be protruding out of the skin.

I was thinking: keel bone? huh?, but then you clarified (Laughing out loud). Umm, I'm pretty sure that's all good, haven't noticed or felt anything abnormal. As for weighing him, I have no idea how to do that, he'd probably up and fly away.

But peoples, I think I have good news. I've been sitting here and watching him out the corner of my eye for the last few hrs or so and I think he's getting better, so I think it was just stress. He's back to squeaking, still not so much when he's out of the cage, but he has attempted squeaking at me, which is progress.

He still plays and rings he's bell and he's getting back to his normal noisy self.

Thanks guys for your replies, and I will keep them in mind for the next time I think he has a problem, which I hope never happens, but you never know :)

If you contact Nerwen she will know what I mean and can probably help you out with weight. I am glad everything sounds good :)

I was chatting to Nerwen the other night, but now she's gone away for a few days grrr. I'll see her next weekend probably anyways, should be all good.

well you know you have us here :) to always feel free to ask.

My vet did it very simple with Merlin. Took a clear plastic container like they use for traveling weighed that and then zeroed it out and then put Merlin in it with the top closed (yes he didn't like it) and then weighed him. He was 41g which was a little slight for him but okay.

im so glad scuttle is getting better.your very lucky having nerwen near by.although i have an avian vet in my town its not the same as having experienced breeder living near me .if i have problems i would normally ask for help on the forum. hope scuttle is getting up to his usual mischief now.
