To Paint Or Not To Paint?

Hi All,

Still planning my aviary, going to use Hardiflex sheeting and a timber frame. I would like to paint my aviary but should I? What if any is the best paint i should use?

Dont want to harm the birds in any way.

I am not to sure, but you want a paint that will not rust and you want the paint to be completley smooth and no bubbels.

Acording to my budgie book...

you do need to use a non-toxic type of paint, hopefully one of our members with experience on this wll answer pretty soon as they always do :)

you should use outdoor house paint that is acrylic based. this is completly safe for birds and lasts a long time and looks good, it also allows for a thicker coat so that it will adhear better to the backing so it wont chip or crack. it is best to do an under coat for what ever the manufacture advises, this will again help to make it adhear and will make the colour stand out more. hope this helps

Thanks Sco-tie.

As Daz painted the inside of some of his breeder cages, he would be able to advise you as to the correct paint to use. Not all acrylic based paints are safe. Also depending on the surface you are painting (metal or wood) a lot of the primers are less safe also. I would rather not have a painted surface anywhere my birds could chew at it. Other treatments for wall...you could cover them with green shade cloth, as cheap as painting and it looks good.
