Breeding Cages

Hey all.....again (Laughing out loud)

I have been thinking of this for ages why is it that with the breeding cages, you can't have grate bottoms..

only newspaper???????

I am guessing it would have something to do with their feet.. But I don't see the difference ....Maybe the eggs....

MAybe for the food....

Wouldn't this make for alot of mess and cleaning???

It easier for the little bubs just learning their feet to have a flat bottom, but the normal wire cage I have used has a grate on the bottom and there was no issues with it. Of cause I could have just been lucky.

There are quite a few show breeders who use breeding cages that are all mesh. Their choice, I think is its easier to clean and the droppings go straight through to a tray underneath. When babies fledge they are used to it after awhile, and the babies dont go around eating everything up off the floor including the droppings as baby budgies do.

My 3 breeding cages have grate bottoms. Much easier to keep clean.

It is better to have the mesh or grate bottoms as the droppings are kept away from the birds.

In having said that, all my breeding cages are timber bottoms with newspaper. I change this once a week and have had no problems.

In buying a cage for a breeding pair, try and make sure it is big enough for an extra 5-6 budgies as you will have when the babies fledge and are learning to fly. Also, as its best to add the nesting box from the outside, look for a cage where you can just raise a hatch door to allow access to the nestbox entry...preferably higher up rather than floor level. A wider cage rather than a higher cage for budgies
