Just thought every body might enjoy these photos that i took of Hannah today

She always looks soft and fluffy plus she has been molting

she looks like a sheep (Laughing out loud) I haven't seen anything like that.

She is very pretty.

She's a pretty thing :D Do me a favour and check her body weight and make sure she is eating well through her moult as her keelbone is showing in some of those photos. Wouldn't want anything to happen to such a sweet thing :budgiedance:

Thanks everyone,

Kaz, I wll get some scales later today and weigh her. Around what weight should she be?

Jillinda

normal weight on budgies is around 40g to 45g the English variety may weigh more. I see what Kaz is saying her keel bone is really defined and it should not be like that.

Should she weigh that much if she is only 3 months old?

If she does need to put on more weight how do i go about it?

Thanks

Jilllinda

At a young age she shouldn't be showing her keelbone unless she has a problem with eating and or worms or other unknowns. Check her vent and see if she is showing signs of a poopy bottom, and watch her for signs that she is actually eating. If she is in with others, it may pay to isolate her ina warm smaller cage so you can monitor her for signs of eating and/ or health issues. She may need worming. Did she come from an aviary with dirt floors ? Wouldnt hurt to give her some soft food with a few drops of Calcivet in it...maybe make her some homemade eggfood.

if she is sick you won't be able to get weight on her you may best take her for a check-up with an avian vet. Pretty had lost weight I am sure when he got sick but his keel bone did not show that much. The thing is that budgies mask illness that weight loss is the first sign of something wrong.

Kaz gave some good advice.

Thanks again, there is so much to learn.

I went out to the aviary for a look and who should be sitting at the feeder eating? Hannah. Looked at all my birds and decided to bring Hannah and Bluebelle inside (bluebelle is looking a bit thin too but she always has). The show breeder that i got them from has a really good and clean aviary but i still went and got some wormer from the vets? will try this.

As for the eggfood my birds have been getting seed, fresh veggies and fruit everyday. They have cuttlebone, calcium blocks and fresh gum leaves and branches.I have also been giving them some egg and biscuit mix from the shop and some that i made myself. I think that they eat better than me (Laughing out loud)

Is there anything else that i can do?

Watch Hannah carefully. If you look closely they often "appear to be eating" but let the seed drop out of their beak and arent actually ingesting the seed. Sounds like you are doing all the right things to begin with though. Try and be in the habit of looking under a bird at their bottom for signs of illness. A healthy bird has a clean vent area. Knowing their bodyweight is essential, and monitoring it if they appear "fluffy". I always add some Calcivet to the youngsters water. :budgiedance:

She's a lovely fluffy little thing- Would like to see her when shes older, looks like a hen I have with the fluffy head and markings. MAkes you want to run your fingers backwards over the head and ruffle them up!!

I thought it was just the way the feathers were sitting- but I could be wrong- does she feel light(thin) or can you feel plenty of meat on her breast?

I weighed her tonight and she was 42g so she is about the right weight.

How ever when i weighed Bluebelle she was 37g but she looks the same as when we got her. Both have nice clean bottoms

Thanks

Excellent. I, also, cannot wait to see how she looks grown up. I have heard there are some good breeders in Tassie. :budgiedance:

will keep you posted. A friend of mine used to breed show birds and even won some national titles a couple of years ago. They decided to retire and sold them off in six lots for thousands of dollars. When i was looking for some birds she gave me the number of one of the people who brought their and thats where Hannah came from(one of his rejects to become one of my favourites)
