Posted March 30, 200718 yr How do I know when a hen is going to lay an egg will she be fat ? How fat, where? and can a hen produce an egg whenever or for all budgie hens every where is a season? Edited March 31, 200718 yr by Lankan
March 30, 200718 yr Budgie can breed all year round, they do have low and high fertile times and that is judged by the cere, in hens they are in breeding condition when the cere is brown and crusty looking, while male have a deep blue (unless the bird is a mutation that keeps the baby pink). When out of condition the hen cere flacks off to a pale blue/ white and the males pales slightly as well. As to pregnant with some bird they get a swelling between their legs when they are about to lay and egg, but the better signs to look for a larger and runnier poops, a swollen vent and a lot of time spent in the nest box.

Generally a hen about to lay an egg will have a lump (egg sized) by her vent. What you are describing sounds a little different. How old is the hen ?
March 31, 200718 yr Author Yes Kaz there is a a lump (egg sized) by her vent that's what I was trying to say. So it is going to lay and egg and how long and the hen is 1 1/2 years old. I had one clutch from the hen and have kept one baby budgie with them and now this is begining to strees the hen the baby took a peak inside the box today and the hen came and poked it out, I was thinking to remove that baby budgie and give it to my cousin who has 4 budgies and take it back after the chicks are weaned but will this affect the hen when I seperate the baby from them

If the hen is trying to start her new family she may injure or even kill the chick that is curious about the nestbox. The hen is being territorial now and she has her egg to lay. I would definitely remove the chick for its own sake. You generally see the lump near the vent on a hen that is about to lay an egg that same day. If you gave the chick to your cousin and then had it back you must do 30 days quarantine to have the chick back later as it would have been with other birds. Removing the chick from the hen wont upset the hen as she has other things on her mind. Edited March 31, 200718 yr by Kaz
