Posted March 29, 200718 yr Thought id give an update on my flock... All the inside birds are doing GREAT, there is Apple who is still as cheeky and as talkative as ever and Munchy n Mig who are also very talkative, Munchy still has his foot mating fetish which hes now passed along to Miggy :oliveb: and then there is Budgie who came to me simply because his owners knew he would be more loved in my home than he was his and his "sibling" Harry the female Cockatiel.. Harry is happy to just be Harry and sit about all day, Budgie LOVES attention and is learning how to talk, he also has this little aeroplane trick that i taught him where on cue he stretches his wings right out, he leans forward and pretends hes gliding from side to side :hap: I have three little Bubs from the aviary that i've been handfeeding now for a few weeks which has been a blessing in disguise. The eldest has been named Cutie and i think he is going to be a little green spangle just like Apple, the middle one is Tic Tac and i'm so excited with him, he is from Apple Munchy and Migs parents but he is turning out ALL really really BRIGHT YELLOW and he has the most beautiful red eyes, i'm not sure if the parents could through a lutino and they haven't before but i'm just hoping and checking everyday that no coloured pin feathers come through hahaaa but they are so far all just bright yellow and un marked.. Then there is the baby who is named Noodle, when he came inside he looked just like a little pink noodle, no pin feathers at all, eyes still closed over and just one little pink BLOB.. i'm not sure what he will turn out to be.. i've had some pretty frightening times out in the aviary, but i hope that is all behind me for now. The trouble with living so remote is not having vet acess or when we do they have absolutely NO IDEA about birds and are more than keen just to put the birds to sleep.. :ausb: .. I have had some sort of illness hitting the birds pretty fast and i've had many deaths, my biggest fear was that whatever it was, getting transmitted to the bigger birds that i have under the patio or worse still inside to Apple and co.. Out of the 30 odd birds that i had outside, i have 17 left.. fingers crossed though as they are all looking really great and i'm hoping that whatever it was has passed.. I have absolutely scrubbed EVERYTHING in the aviary with sterilizing solution, i dug up the sand that was in the main shed section and in the flight area i've removed the plants i couldn't srcub, removed ALL the mulch and soil down to a depth of an inch or so and it all got drenched in the solution also.. If that doesn't atleast help a little i'm screwed .. i'm just glad i got the babies out way before any of this happened. I have had added to my flock of mixed birds a new Eastern Rosella for my little girl and also another Rainbow Lorikeet for Gypsy so he isn't lonely.. Ill try and take some photos of everyone later but thought id just write about how we are all going first.. Cheers  Una
March 29, 200718 yr Thanks for the update. Sorry for your losses and I hope you have it all under control now. Can't wait for the pics and maybe some video of your little talkers :oliveb:

Did you know we celebrated your birthday in your absence? :wine  Oh WoW.. I didnt know heheee Thank you everyone {{HUGS}} On a sadder note, ive had one more loss out in the aviary today Edited March 30, 200718 yr by »-(¯`Una´¯)-»
March 30, 200718 yr What are the symptoms of the sick birds Una ? A combination of soil floor to an aviary and moisture ( rain ) can bring about illness. In particular coccidiosis and also birds can die if not wormed. Worms reinfest through soil floors. In summer months worming ( especially for birds that are on a soil floor aviary ) should be every month and every 3 months any other time. Check your birds and get back to me. I will try and help.
March 30, 200718 yr Author Hello Karen, since last posting ive lost another bird .. All the birds are regularly wormed each couple of months but ive given them another dose just incase.. they just seem to get extremely lethargic, weight loss and some have displayed signs of vomiting, poops are solid.. I was thinking worms at first but i just dont know..
March 30, 200718 yr Hello Karen, since last posting ive lost another bird .. All the birds are regularly wormed each couple of months but ive given them another dose just incase.. they just seem to get extremely lethargic, weight loss and some have displayed signs of vomiting, poops are solid.. I was thinking worms at first but i just dont know.. Vomiting is a sign of a couple of things. Canker and Megabacteria. Canker is commonly treated with Ronivets. I am not sure where you will source it where you are and you would need to have a good diagnosis. Coccidiosis is another weight loss thing. Treatment for Coccidiosis is Coccivet. Depending on how many birds you have that are sick, it would pay to get them in a smaller cage with a warm lamp nearby and watch them closely for symptoms that would indicate how to treat them. But, as you are losing so many, it would be worth popping a deceased bird in the fridge and getting it autopsied or the pattern of illness could go right through the aviary. A very disheartening thing to be happening to you. Has there been any introduced birds where a shortcut on quarantine was taken ? Do wild bird droppings get into the aviary ?
March 30, 200718 yr Author OH MY GOSH.. I just googled up Coccidiosis and rather alot of the symptoms seemed to be like my birds.. The poops have been solid but very WHITE and they have been super lethargic, one also seemed to have a pinkish blood tinge to his poops.. And yeah the native/wild birds do hang about my aviary alot and can pop through over the flight area I have some Sulpha-Quin here that is used for the treatment and prevention of Coccidiosis, would i be jumping the gun if i started treatment?... I'm really at a disadvantage being so remote A quick edit to mention that there have been no new additions to the aviary but i supose thats really not an issue when i think about all the wild birds around anyways Edited March 30, 200718 yr by »-(¯`Una´¯)-»
March 30, 200718 yr Start with what you have as that should help them out a bit along with catching them up and warmth etc. , but get some Coccivet on order straight away or get someone to pick some up for you. Do you need any posted to you ? PS coccidiosis reinfects with soil based aviaries. Edited March 30, 200718 yr by Kaz
March 30, 200718 yr Author I have just sent an EMERGENCY email to Vetafarm asking for the price of freight for a 250ml bottle of Coccivet either EXPRESS POST or even if they could manage to get it to the airport ill pay for it to be sent AIR EXPRESS I just cant believe how mind numb i went as soon as my own birds started getting ill, if it was someone else with the issues i would have been all full of advice, in my panic and heart breaking i kinda lost all train of thought, although if i think about it too much i will just ball my eyes out.. Karen, thank you for being a clear mind for me.. Would Apple and Co inside be at any risk do you think? Whoops the tears have started..
March 30, 200718 yr Your inside birds should be fine as long as there has been no contact either directly or by transferance from your hands. Keep an eye on them. Don't stress. Do what you can and try and stop the losses before they get worse. You are smart, and now you are focussed. You may need to rethink your aviary a little...flooring roofing etc....for the future. As lovely as grass and soil and plants are....my aviary is getting concrete floors as soon as possible stage by stage. And we have no roof area wild bird droppings can get in now. There's a lot to be learnt as we go along. I have a learnt a lot more in recent times as well, through show breeders as their expertise in all matters BIRD HEALTH is tops. Good luck Una :angel1:
March 30, 200718 yr Oh Una I am so sorry that this is happening to you - I wish there was something we could do to help you ((((((((HUGS)))))))) I don't have any advice I could offer but I hope and pray that you can get the meds you need as soon as possible and start treating your birds... Take care Love Sherrie
March 30, 200718 yr Author thank you for your kind words Sherrie, your hugs were very much appreciated.. Karen the whole aviary is going to have a make over which will include cementing floors stage by stage and also covering the roof. I really dont want to ever go through this ever again, so many losses and they were the most beautiful little birds, always coming to me when ever id enter the aviary, hanging off my clothes and running about my feet and hiding in my hair RIP little ones and im so sorry Edited March 30, 200718 yr by »-(¯`Una´¯)-»
March 30, 200718 yr I am really sorry you have had to go through this kind of loss Una. Be strong and I hope with all my heart that it turns around for you soon. Biggest hugs Karen :angel1:
March 30, 200718 yr Glad to see you back but I am so sorry to hear about your bad news it is devestating I know. Not sure if you knew but Pretty died 2 weeks ago yesterday , we still have Merlin .
March 30, 200718 yr Author Elly {{HUGS}} I did read about darling little Pretty, such a shock.. I really hope you and Merlin are doing okay, all my best wishes have been sent to you both.. Out in the Aviary this morning, EVERYONE seems to be flying about all happy although there are two scruffy ones that i will be keeping a closer eye on although they have been scruffy forever.. I have started them on there Medication while i wait for the other stuff to arrive.. I'm absolutely in a panic about the inside birds getting sick so I'm making them chug down lots of Aloe Juice to hopefully help pep them up a little bit.. Havent yet heard back from Vetafarm about the medications and i cant get them on the phone, im assuming it because of the weekend and hopefully ill have better luck on Monday (fingers crossed) Cheers  Una Karen I just opened up my emails, thank you so much for that link... He has stated "The birds would huddle up in the corner and have there vents and tails up as if they had a huge stomache ache." thats EXACTLY what my birds were doing Poor little darlings "I was giving a Sulphur drug to the sick birds to help stop the E. coli and other micro - bacteria from multiplying." Oh Phewww as thats all ive got to use at the moment, I feel a LITTLE more at ease that i might be doing atleast something right now :fear although reading on makes it seem pretty grim..
