Hi Everyone,

Just registered with this site, When i was breeding 10 years ago nothing like this website was around.

Hope you get to know you all.

I'm in the process of designing an Aviary, looking at keeping Budgies and finches and a few parrots. My Aviary is going to be made of three aviaries in one.

Just a few questions for you all:

Has anyone bred budgies in breeding cages whilst they are inside an actual aviary, just wanted peoples thoughts on this on whether it works or not?

Do Budgies live okay with other small parrots?

Looking at places in Melbourne to buy some breeding cages and accessories and cheap good seed, any suggestions.

Thanks

Wayno

Hi Wayno, pleased to meet you. Firstly, yes budgies can colony breed successfully under the right conditions. I personally wouldn't do it though as there are too many things that can go wrong.

Again budgies and other small parrots can get along just fine, just not always in the same cage  Budgies can get very aggressive and are likely to attack the other species if they feel there is not enough room or feed to go around etc. I like your idea of having the aviary sectioned off.

As for places to buy stuff in Melbourne, sorry, I can't help you there, I am only a casual visitor from time to time (about every 10 years or so :hap: )

There is a lot of information on this site with heaps of great advice regarding the first couple of questions you asked. Have a look for some 'pinned' topics in the breeding section.

Good luck with your aviary design. It's great you are asking questions before and not after :)

Thanks Feathers for your welcome.

One other question I have which i forgot to post was Bird Rings, any idea where i can get some from? (Preferably in Australia)

 Welcome to the Forum Wayno! We are a diverse group of budgie owners/?owned by budgies and I cannot help you with your questions but one or more of the breeders shall reply to you within the next 24 hours or earlier. Enjoy yourself reading all the topics and posts. :hap:

Hey there,

Happy to have you here. WELCOME :)

Re breeding in an aviary but also in breeder cages.....any free birds in the aviary will annoy the heck outa the pair in a breeder cage as they climb and walk all over the breeder cage. The cockbird in the breeder cage will spend all his time pacing and trying to get out and not keep his mind on the job of mating the female and feeding the babies. Its great for a breeding pair to hear the aviary birds (helps with breeding stimulus) but not too close in the aviary and in a breeder cage and with other birds around.

bird rings they come with joining a registered bird or budgie club...a big plus all round. You order your rings through the club and you get all the benfits such as info, access to good breeding stock etc

mixed species with budgiesNO....not a good idea.....for many reasons and all bad ones.

Cheers karen :hap:

Karen,

Thanks for your reply and welcoming.

In relation to breeding cages within an aviary, There will not be any budgies in the aviary just small parrots, Also the cages will be on top of each other so the only place the parrots can land is on the cage front.

I do not have any room to put the breeding cages anywhere else. Do you think it will work, i'm only talking about 6 breeding cages.

I do not really have any other options, so would appreciate your opinion.

Thanks

Wayno

If I remember correctly Hommer has breeding cages set up inside the aviary of his birds.

Welcome aboard you will love this bunch :D

Welcome to the forums!

As I said your post about bird rings, I find this a neat coincidence. You're from Werribee too! Your name is the same as my brother's, and you have the same number of budgies as us. *stares* You aren't him, right? :D

Karen,

Thanks for your reply and welcoming.

You may as well try then. If it doesnt work you can always section that area off a little. At least you wont have any escapes doing it that way.

Cheers kaz

Hi... I am new too. However my friend has a few aviaries and she has budgies breeding in the aviary at the moment all 6 boxes are full of eggs she hasn't had a problem with it yet she was told to have the boxes suspended so they are on a platform that is wired to the roof she was told that they like it when it rocks SLIGHTLY she has been breeding for 12 years and there are no problems there she to also has the avairy seperated for her lori's .... I thought of breeding but i rather go there and see it all happen..

But people have their own way of doing things I am sure you will find a way that works for you

Hope it all goes well.

Heya Wayno!!! Another fellow melbournian!! Welcome to the best budgie forum around!! I live on the other side of town so I probably can't help with bird supply shops and stuff. I did go to birdworld in coburg a couple of weeks ago and they were reasonably priced and very clean. Thats the only place I know not on this side, its probably nowhere near you huh? :ausb: Oh well

Would love to see pics of your birds too, real stickybeaks we are

Hi Cheekychucky,

Good to know some people in the same area are on here.

I don't have any pics yet as i'm still planning my aviary and deciding on what birds to get.

What is your setup like? Would love to see some pics too.

Have you had any problems with council, as i want to build a nice big aviary for my birds.

Will keep in touch

Wayno

hi wayno

my birds are kept in an indoor aviary, i put nest boxs on it and through experience to put birds in breeder cages is a good idea! both parents get peace with out the others birds interferring.should be okay in the aviary give it a try and see how you go.

Welcome. Looking forward to seeing your completed aviary and hearing more about your birds. This is a great place.

I am thinking about painting my aviary, can anyone tell me whether its good to paint an aviary or not.

If it is okay, what is the best paint to use so i dont hurt my birds?

you probably will want to start this topic in a separate secion under aviaries so you get more responses
