Show Birds

 Hi all, I recently posted in mutations about identification of my birds. I have since added pictures to the webpage below for people to look. I am paticularly interested in the quality of Jungle, Sky and Sunflower. Whether or not they could be shown. Perhaps Rainbow, Skylark and Cloud as well. Anycomments are fine and I will take no offence to anything said, I am very curious is all. :) Any thoughts on the type of babies Sunflower and Sky would make? Sky is the Male. The other pair I was thinking of breeding was Rainbow and Cloud, Rainbow is the male so again any thoughts on babies. And thank you for all your assistance.

Looks like we have a partner swap or two.

Jungle has now taken an interest in Sunflower and Sky in Cloud.

:( I should note here that Sunflower, Sky and Jungle although bought from a petshop originally came from a breeder as they each have leg tags. So please any comments on showing them or possibly any babies they may have. According to standards written by Daz on Lutinos, Sunflower fits the bill but I'm not sure on head, stance etc.

I would seriously like to breed Sunflower with Sky and Rainbow with Cloud, so if you could please comment on these pairings and what I can do to try and get them or their babies to show. Thank you!

I would also like to find out about tagging birds, do I need to be registered with someone/group and how do you tag, where to get tags from etc. I don't intend to be one of these backyard breeders so to speak, and no offence to those who are, I just wish to do things properly, to insure the best for my babies. :(

Hi Daffy,

Perhaps you could single out these birds for us and try some photos of them on a perch ( like they were showing ) and those that know these things can offer their advice. They do look like nice birds.

Show breeders cull the birds that they feel don't quite make it in their own eyes or to their own standards and they sell them off into petshops. Most of those breeders usually don't want to know about them after that as they are considered "rubbish" or "discard" birds. I have bought some birds that way and have actually won 1sts on the show bench with them and they have bred some beautiful chicks.

I will wait to see your new photos, singularly of these birds "showing" as an up close showing shot is what most show breeders would like to see to be able to comment.

With regard to coded legrings, you need to be a member of a budgerigar club to be able to order these. If this isnt as important you can use colour coded rings just to tell the difference between family lines within your own aviary. Your birds with gold legrings are just last years birds and likely to be around 6-9 months of age, so not old enough to breed quite yet. 12-18 months is usual breeding age.

I cant help you with great confidence re genetics and what you will get with certain pairings as its not my area of expertise, but others can.

Good luck and happy to have you here. :)

Thanks Kaz,

I have added 4 pages to my website above including close-ups of ice. The pics of jungle didn't quite turn out the way I hoped but they are close ups.

Hi there- real pretty birds but they seem to me to be 'pet type' or normal birds with leg rings for means of identification, not actual 'show bird' type. Meadow and Sunflower seem to be closest to 'show type' birds.

Joinging a club will give you access to registered leg rings and also give you alot of information.
