Mottled?

Featured Replies

so why not a mottled??

what does it mean when before when he was born he had normal feathering but now he looks like that and the pied spots are comming in clear with him moulting, and why are his feathers drooped like the other mottled pictures??

I can't speak on mottled Budgerigars as I have only seen one in a magazine...

On the show side. He has great head qualities, very nice mask and spots..

Unfortunately he is sitting to low on the perch (might just be that photo), has over length flights, drooping wings and a hinged tail.. :ausb: You might be able to pair to a tall hen with good stance and back structure..

Hath might be able to comment on the possibilities of breeding out that hinged tail.

I also haven't seen a mottle bird in real life but all the pictures I have seen have been of recessive pied looking birds. The mottle locus ADD more black markings with age. You have stated that this bird is losing black markings. It's not the look of the feathers that matters. This guy might be a poor groomer or even have an illness (as well as the points that Daz brought up that relate to show things) I can't explain how he lost the markings, I've only heard of one other bird doing that on here.

Good points Nerwen.. Sco-tie check the bird for illness, diet or age. He is sitting too low and wings and tail is not right.. Is he labouring to breath, bobbing tail? If so check respritory function.

I agree with everyone else on healthy and not being mottled along with his mutation that Nerwen stated.

Do you have baby pictures showing this bird with normal marking on all his wings?

Here is a website showing mottled http://www.budgieplace.com/c_mottled.html

Also Pretty being a recessive pied he would molt and new spots would reappear here and there and old ones gone I believe that is part of the pied gene in itself.

My first thought apart from knowing your bird is a grey dominant pied and not what I have seen to be a "mottled", was that something isnt right with his stance and feathers. He didnt look healthy and happy. I see some pin feathers on his head so maybe he is just coming out of a moult. But he needs to be watched closely, I would feel, for his health. Lovely head on him and a good look above the shoulders, but he's not a "happy camper" right now

Reading up on Mottles, I read that they don't live long after the transformation. The two examples have lived about 2 months before dying. Sco-tie I don't think that this is a mottle. Both birds I read about lost their feathers on their backs and only had down showing through.

The mottle locus ADD more black markings with age.

"With each progressive molt, more and more of the budgie's feathers grow back clear. The budgie starts to look somewhat like a pied only with a more random, mottled pattern of clear feathers than the established varieties of pied." (from site that Elly posted)

Doesn't this mean that it would lose black markings...

I wonder which is correct that website saids the feathers lose their colour and my book said black colour is added.

Bea - we posted together  I'm not sure one which would be correct but I would lean to stand by my book which was written by a vet.

hmmm Scot said the same thing I did whichever :), I did a search and didn't find anything but that site. With the mottling just as the feather dusters sounds like there may be a genetic disorder involved too as Daz said that they don't live very long after they mottle .

the budgie has allways had his feather held as they are he isn't bobbing his tail or labored breathing, he has been like that since ive had him, he is now about 5yrs old,

thanks for your help
