March 27, 200718 yr Hello Neat and welcome to the forum. Although our web site is entitled Budgie Breeders Club Inc., we cover all aspects of budgie care from feeding, taming, housing, bonding, health problems and showing budgies in competition. However, our mandate is to encourage responsible breeding and from your questions, you are not at all prepared to get into this activity at this time. Breeding budgies is SERIOUS BUSINESS and must not be taken lightly;it concerns me that you want to do this for your young daugher. Much like the letting dogs/cats breed so your children can "experience" the wonder of birth. Most of those poor animals end up being abandoned or sitting in animal shelters all over the world awaiting adoption. There are many factors to consider and I suggest you read ALL forums on ALL the budgie topics and realize what is involved before you decide to do this. Sorry if I sound harsh, but you are lacking basic breeding knowledge and that must be learned first before the actual breeding begins and realize all the responsibilites that go with it.. March 27, 200718 yr Author I totally agree with you. I know that I am not ready yet, I spent all of today reading up on them and I will continue to do so. My daughter is my excuse I would love for her to experience everything life has to offer. But I will wait until I fully understand and am prepared - I had no idea what was involved before posting this message especially with hand raising. THey are wonderful birds I am happy with the 3 we have can you just tell me though why are my male birds courting each other??? Edited March 27, 200718 yr by Daz
March 27, 200718 yr Welcome Neat and I hope we can help you onto the path of responsible bird breeding (if this is what you want to do) read thought this thread: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=13182 it give you idea on all that needs to be thought over before starting. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=13358 this one also has great information. I have a big cage is this fine to breed my daughters birds or do i need the avery If you are going to breed in a cage I would use only the parents in each cage, an extra male in the cage can cause interruptions and fights becuase he wants the hen or the hen or other male doesn't want him near their nesting site. I have not had dealings with colony breeding but others here have who may give you tips later. I didn't like the sounds of the added ricks and so never tried it. why do the boys ignore Snowwhite they are a bit "Too close" they mount and kiss and clean and all that stuff why are they doing it with the girl???? First are you sure you have two males and one hen? some mutations in budgies (recessive pieds) give the males a bright pink cere that are quite often confused for hens. If you can post pictures of the ceres we can let you know. If you do have two males, they are not gay but simply practicing or keeping up their 'wooing' skills. I watch mine all the time and the hens get mad at the flirting males very quickly but the males will happily spend all day singing to each other. edited to add - We must have been posting at the same time. I'm glad to hear you have already start to research. Edited March 27, 200718 yr by Nerwen
March 27, 200718 yr Hi Neat, If you wish to breed using these birds plus another female I would strongly advice against colony breeding (all together in one cage). For colony breeding to have a chance both pairs would need to be very well bonded to each other and it doesn't sound like you have any male/female bonded pairs now. The new female could be seen as a threat if they were to breed soon after you got her and that could start fights, picking on or even death of chicks (which you wouldn't want your daughter to see). If you are considering breeding, read up on the links you have been given above and use separate cages for each couple. Feathers.
