Suggestions About Pairing Up My Mr Violet?

Featured Replies

okay, I know he's no show budgie but he's one of my favourites. I wish his colour would show up in photos but this is the closest I could get to his real colour - but ..... it doesn't do him justice :ausb:

I have a mauve hen and they've hit it off pretty well - but she is more like a grey mauve :yellowhead: But now I've got some time to think about it before I put in together again.

I need to at least get one round of violets as he's already 2 years old and is my only violet male :P

But after that I was thinking maybe a lutino???? or texas clearbody ????????

What would my babies look like???

violet is alway hard to get right in pictures.

To get true violets (visual violets) you need cobalt (one dark factor) and the violet gene.

With the mauve hen there is a change to get visual violets out of the mix.

Lutino would give you green-violets which look like an olive bird. (unless he is split for ino or the hen split blue)

Texas Clearbodies- if white based: you get a very pale violet hue to the body, if yellow based: I'm not sure might show more green in the body feathers.

Thanks for that info....... Sounds interesting. I like the Texas Clearbody idea. :yellowhead:

How would I get a pied?

Oops - not sure where my last reply went - I'm still learning so here it is again :ausb:

How would I get a pied with my violet?

Oh silly me, that would be if the male was spilt Ino or clearbody to get those results. Sorry the through the mix made me miss a step.

With the clearbody white base (male not spilt) you would get a mix of blues and violets. and yellow base: like the lutino greens and green-violet.

With pied to get a dominant pied one of the parents need to be one, to get recessive, both parents need to have the gene, either split or showing.

Thanks Nerwen. I'd like to try find a pied. Is there such a thing as a pastel violet or cinnamon violet??? How would I achieve this?

Sorry - hope you don't mind all the questions :ausb: I'm learning about the genetics and find it fascinating...

I love the questions.. He is a visual Violet (Violet Cobalt) if you pair him to a mauve you might get.

Violet Mauves & Cobalts.

or

Mauves & Visual Violets.

It depends on which Dark Factor he is carrying the violet gene. If it on the Dark factor you will get the 1st option. If it is on the light factor you will get the 2nd option.

I did a post on Violet factors some where here... ah yes here it is...

Violets

Don't know about a pastel violet.. but you can get a Cinnamon Violet. Body colour will be diluted by the cinnamon gene.

The most stricking of all birds is the yellow face type I Visual Violet.. Very beautifull bird.

Thanks Daz - (Laughing out loud) about the questions - there are plenty more where those came from :ausb: . I figured I'd just keep asking until people start ignoring me - then I'll keep a low profile for a while :P.

I love violets....... I also have this bird who I'm absolutely in love with. Again, no show bird but I think his colours are georgeous.

Now I have another visual violet hen (offspring from ^^ violet) but I think she is also a split blue (??) as she has a few patches of blue that are so bright (cobolt I think) that they only show in certain light and kind of blend in with the violet. I'd love to put the two together and see what I get.

Also I have another y/f which I got from a breeder (actually more of a golden face) and he has the dark factor I think as he is a really dark olive green / blue colour. I got him from a show breeder. Maybe I should pair him up with the other visual violet hen.

This is all so exciting. :yellowhead:

I've seen a violet clearbody before -- really pretty. You probably wouldn't get one from him if you paired him to the clearbody -- but you could possibly get them from one of his violet sons -- I know that is looking into the future a bit. Violet mauves I think are pretty too.

To get "pastel" you would probably need to pair him to a dilute or a greywing.. Again you most likely wouldn't get any from the initial pair.. but maybe from his children if they were paired to birds carrying a dilution gene.
